• Note: 7 October 1804; Newcastle, Newcastle Dist., Upper Canada; HMS Speedy left York for Newcastle in the evening of Sunday, Sept 7, 1804, having about twenty passengers, most planning to conduct the trial of Ogetonicut, for the death of death of John Sharp at Lake Scugog in the spring. The Speed would not make it to Newcastle, being lost in a storm on the 8th.

The courthouse was subsequently use as a home by a Captain Selleck and his family. Timothy Thompson, Thomas Ward, Joseph Gibson, and David Rogers used other lots in Newcastle. An incident occurred in 1809 which aptly illustrates this type of action. Captain Selleck had died in April of that year and his widow was left with a large family of small children. "Joseph, her brother acts as guardian and when the stock of provisions was low Joseph would have to look about for a fresh supply. Once while awaiting the return of Joseph who had rowed to Napanee for flour the widow was visited by Joe Skunk, an Indian, who asked in broken English for bread. The widow, considering her destitution and the want of her children burst into tears and told him in the best Indian language at her command that she had no bread and that she and her papooses were starving. Joe replied 'you very good squaw'. He walked down to the shore and taking his spear stuck it into the hard of a large muskelunge lying in the boat and throwing it out on the shore he called to the papooses to come and get the fish.
