  • Note: 1812; Murray Twp., Newcastle, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The part played by the notorious Bill Johnson in Brighton's history is unforgettable. A description is given of some of his activities. "During this time (War of 1812) Grandfather Gibson spent the greater part of his time working and building a schooner for one of his sons on the shore in front of his dwelling (should kind Providence spare his boys to return from the War). He had the schooner nearly completed when a report was made to the American Government by spies that were continually coasting along the Canadian frontier that vessels were being built by the Government for war purposes. Consequently, Bill Johnson (the notorious land pirate as he was called) was sent by the American government to burn the boat. He came from Sackett's Harbour in what was called a revenue cutter boat, and with oars muffled, the crew came noiselessly up the shore at night, threw some inflammable substance on the vessel, ignited it and the boat was soon wrapped in flames from stem to stern, burning to ashes while standing on the stocks. While the boat was burning, the cutter was seen with 6 or 8 oars on either side dipping together into the water taking her departure." I.M. Wellington" from The Tobey Book, page 56.8

  • Note*: 1825; Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1825, the "Frontenac", 170 feet long, with a maximum speed of 10 1/2 miles per hour, became the first steamboat to arrive in Brighton Harbour. Built in 1816, the boat had 18 paddles in the wheels, each of which were forty feet in circumference. Mr. I. M. Wellington wrote of the commotion and excitement resulting from its arrival: "Although Grandfather had helped to build many a large vessel, yet he had never seen a steamboat. The old gentleman, hearing the noise, sprang to his feet, and asked what was making the noise; but when he got sight of the boat rounding Salt Point, making her way into the harbor and dropping anchor, he raised both hands above his head, exclaiming that the world was coming to an end, when we see a ship running without sails. In many days after, a hearty laugh did the young people have at Grandfather's expense over his first sight of a steamboat."" from page 40 of "The Municipality of Brighton", published in 2006.
Note: This is an interesting story but the text raises questions about this Wellington family. I. M. Wellington uses the term "Grandfather" here to refer the old sea captain at Presqu'ile. My research suggests that I. M. Wellington is the son of Josiah Dix Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson. This event takes place in 1825 when Josiah would have been 45 years old - not exactly "The old gentleman", it might seem. I. M.'s paternal grandparents are shown to be Joseph Wellington and Anna Dix; Joseph died in 1819, so it's not him. More likely he is talking about his maternal grandfather, George Gibson, father of his mother, Elizabeth Gibson. George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825.13
