It was deciphered by someone else to read: "York, 5th May 1796. "Received of John McGill, Esquire, commissary of stores, etc., for his Majesty's forces in Upper Canada, for public service ordered by his Excellency Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe, at York. One hundred and forty-three pounds spikes, fifty pounds pitch, thirty-five pounds oakum, eight pounds 20d nails, one grapnail, five inch tarred rope, ninety-eight pounds, thirty pounds bar iron for bolts, having expended the same in building and fitting out a strong boat for the purpose of transporting stone for the Government House. "I have signed three receipts of same tenor and date.
"GEORGE GIBSON (following is an endorsement for the same on the same date). I wonder if this it my great-grandpa George..." this is from an email sent to me by Deborah Gibson, a fellow researcher into the Gibson/Selleck families, Feb 19 2019.6 - Residence: 12 February 1797; Newark, Niagara Dist., Upper Canada; "Charles Sillick and Elizabeth Gibson married in Niagara on February 12, 1797. Their marriage is listed in the publication "Ontario Historical Society Papers and Records, Volume 3, published in Toronto 1901"."
- Note: 1802; Newcastle, Newcastle Dist., Upper Canada; "Very soon thereafter Capt. Sellick, an Englishman, the owner of a schooner called the Lady Murray, with his father-in- law, George Gibson, a ship carpenter, who had served an apprenticeship in the Woolwich dockyards in London, England, came with their families and settled at Presqu’ile." I. M. Wellington provided history of Presqu'ile which appeared in Ontario Historical Society, Papers & Records, Vol. 4-6, 1905, from Ed Burtt's collection.
- Residence*: 1802; Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "One of the first settlers on Stoney Point was Joseph Gibson on lot 33. He came in 1832 from Presqu'ile Point where he and his parents, George and Mary Gibson, had settled in 1802. He had served in the War of 1812 and in the Northumberland Militia in 1828. He married Mary (Polly) Simpson, daughter of Obediah Simpson. Their children were Robert, Evaline (Sherwood), Nelson, James, Sophia (Taylor), Deborah (George), Sarah (Unger) and Mary." from page 14 of "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, published 2009.
Note: (1)The earliest record of a Gibson in Murray Township census or assessment records was in 1814. They are not in early Cramahe records either. Presqu'ile Point appears to have been considered part of Murray at this time. It appears Murray census takers from 1803 to 1813 did not cross over to Presqu'ile. Wonder why???7 - Note: 7 October 1804; Newcastle, Newcastle Dist., Upper Canada; HMS Speedy left York for Newcastle in the evening of Sunday, Sept 7, 1804, having about twenty passengers, most planning to conduct the trial of Ogetonicut, for the death of death of John Sharp at Lake Scugog in the spring. The Speed would not make it to Newcastle, being lost in a storm on the 8th.
- Note: 1812; Murray Twp., Newcastle, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The part played by the notorious Bill Johnson in Brighton's history is unforgettable. A description is given of some of his activities. "During this time (War of 1812) Grandfather Gibson spent the greater part of his time working and building a schooner for one of his sons on the shore in front of his dwelling (should kind Providence spare his boys to return from the War). He had the schooner nearly completed when a report was made to the American Government by spies that were continually coasting along the Canadian frontier that vessels were being built by the Government for war purposes. Consequently, Bill Johnson (the notorious land pirate as he was called) was sent by the American government to burn the boat. He came from Sackett's Harbour in what was called a revenue cutter boat, and with oars muffled, the crew came noiselessly up the shore at night, threw some inflammable substance on the vessel, ignited it and the boat was soon wrapped in flames from stem to stern, burning to ashes while standing on the stocks. While the boat was burning, the cutter was seen with 6 or 8 oars on either side dipping together into the water taking her departure." I.M. Wellington" from The Tobey Book, page 56.8

- Note*: 1825; Murray Twp., Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "In 1825, the "Frontenac", 170 feet long, with a maximum speed of 10 1/2 miles per hour, became the first steamboat to arrive in Brighton Harbour. Built in 1816, the boat had 18 paddles in the wheels, each of which were forty feet in circumference. Mr. I. M. Wellington wrote of the commotion and excitement resulting from its arrival: "Although Grandfather had helped to build many a large vessel, yet he had never seen a steamboat. The old gentleman, hearing the noise, sprang to his feet, and asked what was making the noise; but when he got sight of the boat rounding Salt Point, making her way into the harbor and dropping anchor, he raised both hands above his head, exclaiming that the world was coming to an end, when we see a ship running without sails. In many days after, a hearty laugh did the young people have at Grandfather's expense over his first sight of a steamboat."" from page 40 of "The Municipality of Brighton", published in 2006.
Note: This is an interesting story but the text raises questions about this Wellington family. I. M. Wellington uses the term "Grandfather" here to refer the old sea captain at Presqu'ile. My research suggests that I. M. Wellington is the son of Josiah Dix Wellington and Elizabeth Gibson. This event takes place in 1825 when Josiah would have been 45 years old - not exactly "The old gentleman", it might seem. I. M.'s paternal grandparents are shown to be Joseph Wellington and Anna Dix; Joseph died in 1819, so it's not him. More likely he is talking about his maternal grandfather, George Gibson, father of his mother, Elizabeth Gibson. George Gibson was also a sea captain living at Presqu'ile Point and appears in Murray Township census records until 1825.13 - Census: 1825; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1825 Census: George Gibson, Sr.; 1 male over 15; 1 female over 16; Total 2 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Murray Twp.)10
