- Burial*: 1796; Dutchess Co., New York, U.S.A.; FindaGrave: Name: Josiah Bull Sr.; BIRTH: 1713, North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA; DEATH: 1796 (aged 82–83), Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York, USA; BURIAL: Unknown; MEMORIAL ID: 71079527; Note: osiah Bull settled in Dutchess County, N.Y., where he resided and where be died at an advanced age. He had a brother Jeremy or Jeremiah, who, as early as the beginning of the French War, lived at a settlement called 'Little Rest,' about fifteen miles east of Poughkeepsie. Jeremy had children-a son, Jeremy, and a daughter, Esther, who married one Henry Tibbits.
The wife of Josiah Bull was a woman of Dutch extraction, named Tripp, who, in harmony with the marvels of colonial tradition, was owner of no less than two hundred acres of land now occupied as the site of New York city. Josiah married 1737 to Ruth Tripp In Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island. Josiah & Ruth Bull were Quakers and members of the Oblong Monthly Meeting, living near Pleasant Valley, Dutchess county, NY. They had six sons and three daughters: Josiah (1738-1813), married Mehitable Thomas, then Mary Christy, Mary (1740-1748), Joseph (1744-?). Sarah (1745-?), Benjamin (1747-?), Robert (1748-?), George (1749-?), married Elizabeth Powell, Henry (1752-?), Ruth (1754-?) married Jacobus Degraff. This family resided in Dutchess County, N.Y., not far from the present city of Poughkeepsie, and close to the Hudson river. During the War of Independence two brothers were taken prisoners and sent to the city of New York, unknown to the rest of the family. The treatment of Quaker non-combatants in New England was not less severe than that meted out to their co-religionists in Pennsylvania, as one of the Bull brothers died from violence and privation, while the other survived only long enough to be rescued by his relations, and died soon after. - Burial*: 1724; Rhode Island, U.S.A.; FindaGrave: Name: John Bull; BIRTH: 5 Jan 1677, Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA; DEATH: 1724 (aged 46–47), North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA; BURIAL: Unknown; MEMORIAL ID: 71080034; Note: John Bull, eldest child, and only son, of Isaac Bull and his 1st wife, Mary, was born in 1677 in England. He was married in 1707, in Rhode Island, to Mary Closson, 4th child of Josial Closson and Mary Williamson. Mary Closson was born 08 January 1687 at Little Compton, R.I.
John Bull was called a miller in North Kingston, Rhode Island. He and Mary had ten children, one of whom, Ruth, may have died yo8ung as no further record of her has been found.
Six of their sons, (all excepting John), moved into New York Colony about the same time, some settling in Dutchess County. Mary's brother, Nathan Closson, had migrated to Dutchess County, so this may have influenced the six young Bull brothers to "go west" and eventually settle there. They had large families which later helped to colonize the wilderness of other parts of New York in the north and west. Some went to Vermont, the southern part of which was New York at that time. During, and following, the Revolutionary War, some of their descendants went up into Quebec and some eventually migrated westerly across Canada.
