  • Note: June 1838; Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Comfort Curtis was a leader of the Reformers in the skirmish that is called "The Percy Rebellion of 1838". The McKenzie Rebellion had occured in late 1837 in Toronto and unrest was evident all around Ontario as the Tories (conservatives) rushed to squash any form of protest by Reformers. A minor confrontation between Comfort Curtis and a group of Reformers and the Percy Militia ended in a few bruises an not much more. Curtis left for the US until things quieted down but was back by 1840 when he help his brother John Curtis build the first brick house in Percy, on the Warkworth/Norham Road.     Note: An example of "squatters" would be Alexander Chisholm who built mills on the creek where Spring Valley is now. He came in expecting to get the Crown Reserve granted to him but his wife Nancy and step-son John Singleton did not own the land until the 1820's.
