- Residence: 1878; Conc 2 Lot 1, Brighton Twp., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; The Belden County Atlas of 1878 has a detailed map of Brighton Village which shows the Village Lots and their numbers. The village lots represent the urban development up to 1878. Note that the land where Dorman St. would be is labelled clearly as "Estate of Thomas D. Sanford, 6 ½ acres". There is a rectangular piece of land along the east side of Kingsley Ave. labelled "A" - this is a large lot tha requires clarificiation. Oddly, the letters "ST" are in a blank space between Village Lots 15 and 16 on the west side of Young Street, which may indicate a street might be in the making, but not done yet. HUH???
The black square in the Sanford property would be the larger house that became 16 Dorman St. I must assume that this was the Sanford homestead. Note that there is no black square for the brick house that would appear later on Kingsley and be at the north east corner of Dorman and Kingsley.
The term "marked as T. D. Sanford" appears as the description in several land records and we can expect that it refers to this map which shows "Est. T. D. Sanford 6 ½ acres" It is land that was the Sanford farm well into the 1900s and did not evolve into Village Lots until much later as pieces were sold for development in the later 1900s. This kind of reference is not uncommon in land records, where there is no village lot number to use.
