- Residence*: 1817; Land where Brighton would be, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The Tobey Book, pg. 47, shows "We have now recorded eight families whose land was offically registered. They are" Obediah Simpson, 1796; Jeremiah Scripture 1808; James Richardson, 1809; Henry Nix, 1811; Josiah Proctor, 1814; John Singleton, 1815; T. D. Sandford, 1817; and James Lyons, 1817. Undoubtedly there were a few who were squatters living on land marked by themselves and not by a surveyor. Therefore these people are not mentioned in the Ontario Registry."
Note: An example of "squatters" would be Alexander Chisholm who built mills on the creek where Spring Valley is now. He came in expecting to get the Crown Reserve granted to him but his wife Nancy and step-son John Singleton did not own the land until the 1820's.6 - Residence: 10 June 1817; Conc 2 Lot 1, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 541) show that Edward Goodyear sold 100 acres in the west half of lot 1, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Thomas D. - Note: 2 April 1831; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; A meeting was held at Union Hall, in the Kellogg Inn, at the south-west corner of Main and Prince Edward Streets, on April 2, 1831, to select a name for the new unified village underway at this place. They picked "Brighton" for the village name, after Brighton, England. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 3 2023)
- Note*: 1834; Sanford Hotel, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; A map of Brighton downtown on page 130 of The Tobey Book shows "1834 Sanford's Hotel" on the north side of Main Street, to the east of Kingsley Street. Also, it shows "26 1836 W. H. Sanford, Sanford's Hotel or Brighton Hotel" on the west side of Young Street, toward the north side of the block at Sanford Street. This means that Thomas Dorman Sanford (1787-1846) had a hotel on the north side of Main Street in 1834 and then the hotel moved in 1836 to the east a bit, and was operated by his son, William Hawley Sanford. This hotel would operate for several decades and be known as the Brighton Hotel.
Note: Susan Brose mentions in History of Brighton Business that Main Street immediately to the west of Young and Prince Edward Streets was originally not straight as we see today. In fact, Dundas Street, coming from Smithfield, went straight through to Main Street a little west of Young, slightly cutting off that corner. However, I have not seen a map that shows that. All of the maps in the Tobey book show a straight corner. I speculate that the original Danforth Highway went right up Dundas Street and swerved a bit north before Prince Edward Street but that this corner was made square sometime in the 1830s (no info re when this happened) when the corner was seen as important as the location of a store. Certainly, in 1841 when John Edward Proctor and Abijah Squier had a store there, I expect it was a square corner, more or less.6,7 - Residence: 28 April 1835; Conc 2 Lot 4, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records (B&S 3961) show that Obadiah Simpson sold 1 acre in the north east part of lot 4, conc 2, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co. to Thomas D.
