  • Note*: 1887; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In 1887 John E. Proctor was exporting large quantities of lumber and grains to American ports on the south shore of Lake Ontario, Oswego, Rochester, NY, Lockport and Waterton. He decided the American sailing ships that were delivering his produce were charging exhorbitant freight rates. He mortgaged his farms and between 1887 and 1890 built three (probably more) sailign ships. The flag ship was the ERC Proctor, named after his eldest son, Dr. E. R. C. Proctor, who had been educated at Upper Canada College at U. of T., entered practice in Toronto, was thrown from his horse and broke his neck. These ships plied the Great lakes and proved very profitable. Much of his trade was carried out with his brother William C. Proctor, John S. Proctor's grandfather, who had established a lumber, grain and dry goods wholesale import business under the name of McKinnon, Proctor & McCaul on Front Street in Toronto (where the Royal York Hotel now stands) and which was then warf and lake front property. In September of 1892(?) a hurricane (similar to Huricane Hazel in 1960?) struck the Great Lakes and much shipping was lost including my Grandfather's three ships. Fortunately with little loss of life, as they were all driven ashore - the ribs of the E.R.C. Proctor can still be seen in the marsh on the north shore of Brighton (Gosport) Bay - the anchor is in the museum at Presqu'ile Park. This disaster brok my Grandfather's health and my Father, Charles Russell Weller Proctor, the second youngest son, took over the management of the business. He was at this time living at home and the manager of the Standard Bank at Brighton." from Autobiography of John W. Proctor, pg. 6.12
