- Residence*: circa 1792; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "'Old Joe', a Loyalist from Vermont, settled in the 1790's at Lakeport (known initially as Cramahe Harbour, Colborne Harbour, or Cat Hollow). Shortly afterward, he was followed by a group of settlers. They included Aaron Greeley, an American surveyor who came at Keeler's request to lay out a town site. But it is 'Young Joe' who is considered Colborne's founder. He was its first merchant, opening a store in 1815, and its first postmaster. He donated land for a public square, and to both the Methodist (now United) and Presbyterian churches. He was also justice of the peace." per "Homesteads: Early buildings and families from Kingston to Toronto" by Margaret McBurney & Mary Byers, 1979, pg. 144.

I hold a lease of lots number 34 broken concession A & B in Murray. The lease was granted by government to Alexander Chisholm and Aaron Greeley. In July 1802, Greeley became involved and left the province and joined the enemy and was taken prisoner in the late war and paroled with the militia." "After the war, Greeley returned to Detroit. Mrs. Greeley and the four children returned to Upper Canada and took residence near Grafton until 1821. She was planning to return to Detroit, but her husband took sick with fever and died suddenly in 1821. She then made a home for herself and family on Lot 2, Concession 2 of Haldimand Township. She died here in 1866 at the age of 91 years. Two of her sons died in the 1850s. The third son was killed by a rolling log. Susan Greeley was a school teacher and in 1831 tought school in Colborne. She was a Sunday School teacher for 80 years in the Presbyterian Church. At age 92, she dictated her "Sketches of the Past" a most interesting family story. This story was published in 1926 by the Ontarwio Historical Society and a copy is deposited in the Cobourg and District Public Library. Susan Burnham Greeley died Sept. 7, 1904 in her 99th year." from a newspaper article in The Saturday Morning Post, October 7, 1989, page 11, under Golden Memories, called "Aaron Greeley, Jr. 1773-1821", and available from the Cobourg Library Image Database.
