She raised the alarm but it was too late to prevent the huge fire that consumed almost all of the buildings on the Murray side of the village. Destroyed in the fire was a hotel, a bakeshop, the Methodist Church, as wll as several residences including that of Henry Hayes, the owner and operator of the aforementioned blacksmith shop. Spared by the fire was the Murray Post Office and a store operated by John and Ida Boyce. Analysis: W. J. Buchanan must mean William Busby Buchanan, who has a sister and is the only W. Buchanan alive in this group in 1912. Their Aunt would be the sister of their mother (Elizabeth Stuart), Mary Ann Stuart who was the wife of Henry Hayes and lived in Carrying Place. John Buchanan would be John E. Buchanan, son of Thomas Buchanan, who lived in Carry Place as well. This confirms from another source (besides Bernice Brown and Charles Buchanan) that Thomas Buchanan and Robert Buchanan likely were brothers - although it does not say whether William Busby Buchanan was FIRST cousin to John Buchanan or not.14 - Residence: 1923; Henry St., Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; Per Death Reg'n., was living at the Henry St. location for 5 years at time of death.

- Death*: 7 September 1982; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Remembered opening of canal: Trenton - One of the oldest residents in the Quinte area died this week at age 106. Amelia Hayes died Tuesday, just six weeks before celebrating her 107th birthday. for the past five years she had lived at Green Acres Nursing Home in Bayside. Miss Hayes was born Oct. 28, 1875 in Carrying Place and started teaching school in the Hillier area when she was just 15 years of age. She moved to Trenton during the early years of the 1900's and started to teach at Dufferin Public School where she taught Grades 7 and 8 until she retired in 1938. Miss Hayes lived alone until she was 102, in her parents home on the corner of Dufferin and Henry Streets. Mrs Alice Hayes, Amelia's sister-in-law, said Wednesday that Miss Hayes was always fond of children and was also very involved in community affairs. She was a long-time member of the Trenton Library Board and performed the ribbon cuttng when the Cox branch library was opened several years ago. Two years ago, on her 105th birthday, Miss Hayes received a telegram from Queen Elizabeth congratulating her on her special day. During many of her recent birthday celebrations many of the people who came out to honour her were former pupils at either Hillier or Dufferin schools. At one birthday party Miss Hayes said one of her earliest recollections was sitting on her father's shoulders and watching Sir John A. Macdonald open the Murray Canal. One of her former students commented at a birthday party that Miss Hayes "had an awful lot of children" even though she did not marry. The funeral will take place at 1:30 pm at St. George's Anglican Church,Trenton, with Archdeacon Michael Caswell officiating. Miss Hayes was predeceased by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hays, by a sister Mrs. Florence Chase, and by two brothers, Arthur and Harry Hayes,. She is survived by a sister-in-law Alice Hayes of Trenton and by many nephews and nieces." from The Belleville Intelligencer, Sept. 9, 1982, part of Jean Anderson's papers.5
