The first editor was R. D. Chatterton and he issued Volume 1, No. 1 on January 11, 1831. The word "Newcastle" in the paper's title would likely have been inserted, because the town of Cobourg was situated i nthe old district of Newcastle. The name R. D. Jones Ruttan, son of Henry Ruttan, Sheriff of Cobourg" from short BIO by Percy Climo, presented Jan 11 1983, 152nd birth day of the Cobourg Star. http://images.ourontario.ca/Cobourg/48672/data?n=18
- Note: October 1848; Agrcultural Exhibition, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West; "Early in the 1840's, Chatterton invented and developed a special wheel for steamboats, that was more efficient and superior to the models then in use. He travelled to Great Britain to demonstrate and primate his invention, spending several months overseas.
At the third Grand Provincial Argricultural Exhibition held in Cobourg, on Factory Hill, in the area bounded by Sinclair, King and Burnham Streets, early in October 1848, Chatterton displayed a model of his invention. The citation from the Prize List of that great show reads as follows: "Among the Fine Arts was exhibited a model of a new Steamboat Wheel, invented by R. D. Chatterton, Esq., of this town, which in the opinion of the judges, as well as our own, will soon supercede the old one altogether." from short BIO by Percy Climo, presented Jan 11 1983, 152nd birth day of the Cobourg Star. http://images.ourontario.ca/Cobourg/48672/data?n=18 - Residence: 1851; 50 Havelock St., Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Canada West; "50 Havelock - 1851; R.D. Chatterton arrived in Cobourg about 1830. Shortly thereafter, he founded the Cobourg Star. At one time it was Canada's oldest continually published weekly newspaper, which began in 1831. An unusual Regency Tudor-Gothic style Flemishbond brick house, its fine proportions, unique massing and detail give it a decidedly English look. Note the drip moulds over the windows and the quaint brick portch fronting the street." Coborug Walking Tour ...
