He finally went as far south as Louisiana where his son Walton married a Southern Belle named Nancy. About 1900 he took his family by covered wagon across country, crossing thirty major rivers in flood time, to end up in North Dakota on the Red River. Walton raised a large family and was elected twice as Senator of North Dakota. Walton and family came back to his roots in Smithfield about 1925.
