One of the first settlers to respond was John Morris Flindall. On 25 April 1815 he and his wife Susannah Mitchel and their six children set sail from London, England, on board the Tyne of London, under Captain Mitchell, along with other emigrants. The move of the settlers was under the jurisdiction of Lord Bathurst, the Secretary of State for War and Colonies. If the winter of 1815 was hard, the summer that followed was even worse. The entire year of 1816 became infamously known by Upper Canadians as the summerless year. There was frost in every single month, and crops were either extremely poor, or totally nonexistent. The family lived for much of that year on a diet of fish, meat, and whatever vegetables they could scrounge in order to survive. Not a very nice introduction to a new life, but unfortunately it was not avoidable. John M. is said to have written in a diary; "We are living on turnips and potatoes." He emigrated to Canada in 1816, where he expected to become King's Printer. Being disappointed in this behalf, he subsequently purchased a farm of two hundred acres at the Carrying Place, and for a while carried on farming. He had three sons and four daughters. John F. Flindall, his eldest son, was born in London, England in 1804, and came to Canada with his father when only twelve years of age. He did not take kindly to farming in his youth, although in later years he owned large tracts of land. he was possessed of a commercial spirit, was ambitious to succeed, and we find him, while a mere youth, employed as a clerk by Colonel Adam Henry Meyers, who had opened a large general store at the "Trent" in 1808. Some years later young Flindall, who in the meantime had attained his majority, started a distillery in Trenton on a small scale, which he ran so succesfully that it became necessary to increase its capacity, and he purchased a tract of land in Sidney, and built a more commodious distillery. Some years later he built a large stone distillery in East Trenton, but transformed it into a brewery and malt house. • Note*: 1814; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; One of Brighton's pioneers took three months to go from Quebec to Carrying Place by batteau. This was George J. Flindall who was born in London, England in 1810 and was only four years old when he came to Canada. THE BRIGHTON ENSIGN of February 16, 1900 in announcing his decease said: "George J. Flindall of Brighton formerly of Murray Township passed over the Great Divide on 31 January, emigrated to this country when but four years old, landed at Quebec and took three months more in a Bateaux to reach Carrying Place, where, he was transported by Asa Weller to the Waters of the Weller Bay."
