They laid her in an evergreen grave,
When April showers and winds blew chill,
No flowers blooming in the vale,
    No sunshine on the hill.
She waited not for the flowers,
    Of springtime here below,
But passed away to other climes,
    Where flowers immortal grow.
And nature smiled not as she went,
    She heard no parting sigh,
She needed not the flowers of spring
To teach her how to die.
While she tarried here on earth below,
    Her feet had ever trod,
The way of truth and righteousness,
    That leadeth up to God.
In her bright morn ere cares had left,
    Many traces on her brow'
God took her to the realms of light,
    Where she is happy now.
Then weep not, husband and parents dear,
Though from your sight she's gone,
She'll never know the ills that strew
    This vale of life along.
So mourn not for your loved one's I gone,
But bear your grief and pain,
For yours is but an earthly loss,
    And her's a heavenly gain,
A faithful follower of Jesus here,
    With Jesus now above,
She waits to greet you in the land,
Where all is peace and love.

CODRINGTON. In loving memory of Mrs. J. W. Kemp and infant daughter, Ruth: O, what a sad, sad word, farewell, To speak with longing pain; 'Tis hard to live but O how sweet To die when death is gain. Our loss is their eternal gain, Our hearts with grief are riven. But let us wipe our streaming eyes; We know they are safe in Heaven.

  • Note: 12 April 1916; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; "KEMP - In Brighton Township, Wednesday, April 12th, 1916, Alice Lawson, wife of John W. Kemp, in her 37th year. The funeral will take place from her late residence at 1 p.m., Friday, 14th inst., to Bethany Church for service. Interment at McPhail's Cemetery." from pg. 029 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022.
Note: Notice that the service will be held at Bethany Church. This was the Methodist church that was located north of Orland, on the east side of No. 30 Highway and on the north side of the sideroad that is now called Tower Line Road. This is across the highway from the end of Loomis Road. That lot was owned by Cyril Peister and a modern house built there. It was part of the Peister farm. In 1929, Bethany church was moved up the highway to Codrington and became the Codrington United Church. Many other parts and pieces were taken from the church in Mount Olivet to make up this new church. It is the place I spent a lot of time as a kid at Sunday school and summer bible school, and such. That church was removed in the 1980s. (Dan Buchanan, Dec 21 2022)13
