Note: The 1851 Census for Brighton Twp. was taken between Jan 1 1852 and April 21 1852. Brighton Twp. was created Jan 1 1852 and The Breakaway killed Lewis Shearer April 21 1852 - and he is in the 1851 Census - along with brothers John Herrington and Jacob Herrington.)8 - Note: 21 April 1852; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; The Breakaway was a major event that happened April 21, 1852 when a small glacial lake north-west of Hilton broke through the gravel bank that was acting as a dam, allowing the whole contents of the lake to gush down the creek. Two men were killed at a saw mill a mile or so to the east and a major part of the Percy Road was damaged because it ran over the gravel bank. The fatalities were Lewis Shearer, owner of the mill that was destroyed, and Jacob Herrington, a neighbour who happened to be helping him that night. There has been a lack of information regarding the second fatality, always recorded as a Herrington, but with no given name. In light of the best info available, I felt it may have been John C. Herrington. After info re this was on www.treesbydan.com for a few years, a researcher in New York state sent me the image of a memorial of John C. Herrington and wife Louisa Richmond in Lapeer County, Michigan. Further research shows that they went to the Rochester area in 1868 and then later to Michigan. Further research shows that it was John's brother, Jacob Herrington who died in the Breakaway. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 23 2021)
- Note*: circa 1865; New York, U.S.A.; Census info suggests that John C. Herrington and wife Louisa Richmond left Ontario and went to the Rochester, NY area around 1865. They are shown at Ogden, Monroe Co. in the 1870 Census. The 1880 Census shows them in Delaware Twp., Sanilac Co., Michigan.3

- Note: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Next east on the creek was Edmund Thorne who had brought his family to Conc 5, Lot 2 only a couple of years before. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)
