- Note: circa 1935; Hilton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "In Spring of 1851, when the lake was at its height, the bank weakened due to spring overflow, with the resulting damage to the farms owned by the following families: Shortt, Thompson, Morrow, Edmond Thorne farm. The Thorne farm was owned by the grandfather of the present Gordon Thorne. At that time the elder Mr. Thorne was on his way to his family home returning from the Hilton Store. While riding horse-back he heard the roar of the waters and realizing the lake was flooding, took his family to the top of a hill on the home farm to watch the approach of the flood waters. The family saw the rushing lake taking trees etc. away and also in the course of the current a saw-mill below the lake damn was swept away and a Mr. Shearer was washed down with the mill, and was later found buried in the sand. At the present time, the cuts of the banks from the flood are still visible and one can see the widening of the path as it crosses the No. 30 highway, and for many miles beyond it.
Mr. Gordon Thorne recalls helping his father salvage pine logs which had been buried in the sands at this time, and remembered finding them unscathed as at time of cutting many years before. Mr. Thorne today, still owns 25 acres of the original farm which has belonged to his family since 1836." This is called The Thorne Paper, 1 page, type-written. Not sure by whom or when it was written, probably in the 1960s or so. - Residence: 6 January 1943; R.R. No., 1, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Informant for Death Reg'n. of his father Alonzo Wallace Thorne.13
