- Note*: 9 July 1955; Calgary, Alberta; "A. W. Dingman, the soapman turned wildcatter: by C. L. Dingman - Born at Greenbush, Prince Edward County, Ontario in March 1850, Archibald Wayne Dingman was of United Empire Loyalist stock (He passed on March 7, 1936, at 85). A. W. Dingman's original business experience in the Oil Industry was in Pennsylvania as a very young man. He was also associated with the manufature of Coaster Brakes in Toronto, Ontario. Another venture was his employment with the Scarboro Electric Railway in Toronto for several years. He was also associated with the first company to install electric light in the City of Toronto and other cities. Added to the above, he was one of the partners of Pugsley, Dingman & Co., in Toronto, the manufacturers of Comfort Soap. The factory was burned down in the disastrous Toronto fire, about the year 1900. The business, however, went on to oustanding success. Shortley after his arrival in the west, about 1902, he came to live in Calgary, and here organized the old Calgary Natural Gas Co. in 1905. This company drilled 2 wells, one in the Sarcee Indian Reserve in 1906. This well obtained no results and was abandoned at 3.400 feet. The second well, the Walker Well, started in August of 1908 and in May 1909 at 3,414 feet encountered gas estimated at 1,000 M.C.F. daily. Piper was laid from the well to the Calgary Brewing and Malting Co.'s premises, where gas was first used in April 1910. the mains were later extended for domestic fuel and street lighting in East Calgary. Mr. Dingman obtained the original franchise to supply Natural Gas to the city of Calgary. The gas from the Walker Well was used in East Calgary for some time, and for about 40 years to supply fuel for heating at The Walker Estate in Calgary. A. W. Dingman organized The Calgary Petroleum Products Co. in 1912. This company drilled the first producing well in Turner Valley, which started operations in January 1913. This first well struck commercial production in May, 1914, which was the beginning of the fantastic oil boom in 1914 in Calgary. Mr. Dingman also organized the Highwood Petroleum Co., later Highwood-Sarcee Oils, which brought in a commercial producer in 1934. Mr. Dingman was still working up until about 2 weeks prior to his death at 85, and had 10 years work planned for the future. His slogan was alway "Carry on, we want and need more crude oil." His persistance and continual faith in the oil possibilities of Alberta, were instrumental in the decision of the Imperial Oil Co., to advance the necessary capital to incorporate "The Royalite Oil Co." in January 1921." article written by his son, Claude Lane Dingman, in the Western Oil Examiner, July 9, 1955.
