Dingman, Local Oilman, Dies Suddenly - Charles Willard Dingman, 57, pioneer oil man and well known petroleum engineer, died suddenly in the General Hospital shortly after midnight today following a brief illness. His home was at 514 Sunderland Ave. Mr. Dingman came to Calgary in 1913 and was associated with his uncle, the late A. W. Dingman, in the Calgary Petroleum Products Company for a year before the famous Dingman No. 1 well. "Dingman Discovery", blew in dramatically in May, 1914, starting the historic Turner Valley oil boom. Born in Toronto, "Charlie" Dingman moved to Picton, Ont., at an early age, and recieved his education there. From 1920 to 1931, Mr. Dingman served with the federal government as an inspector of gas wells. In 1932 he was associated with the old Turner Valley conservation board, and then was in private practice as a petroleum engineer until 1935. In 1935 Mr. Dingman was appointed director of the petroleum and natural gas division of lands and mines, a position he held until his appointment as deputy chairman of the petroleum and natural gas conservation board in 1938. He remained with the board as deputy chairman and later chairman until 1941. Since that date he has held the position of chief petroleum engineer with the Home Oil Company. Many Activities. Prominent in a wide field of activities, Mr. Dingman was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and of the Rotary Club of Calgary, and was a Mason. He was also well known in Edmonton where he lived for a number of years while employed with the provincial government. Mr. Dingman was a member of a number of professional organizations including the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta, the Alberta Society of Petroleum Geologists, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the American Institute of Mining and Metallugical Engineers. Mr. Dingman is survived by his wife; three children, Robert, formerly of the R.C.A.F., and a released prisoner of war who is now attending the University of Alberta, and John and Joan at home; his mother, Mrs. A. H. Dingman; and one brother, A. R. Dingman, of Calgary, manager of the Royal Trust Company. His father, A. H. Dingman, a farmer at Wellington, Ontario, resided in Calgary for a time before his death some years ago. Caonon E. H. Maddocks will conduct funeral services Saturday at 2:45 pm in St. Stephen's church. Burial will be in Calgary cemetery.
