  • Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after.
