- Death*: 7 March 1936; 420 Roxboro Road, Calgary, Alberta; "A. W. Dingman, Who Proved Valley Oil Field in 1914, Died: Closely Linked With Development of Industry - Widely known throughout Canada as the "grand old man of the Alberta oil industry", A. W. Dingman, whose company drilled the discovery well in Turner Valley in 1914, thereby bringing into being the greatest oil field in Canada., died at his Calgary residence, 420 Rosboro Road, early Saturday morning, at the age of 85 years. In addition to his pioneer work in Turner Valley, the late Mr. Dingman had to his credit the fact that he was associated with the first company to install electric light in the city of Toronto and other Ontario cities. Not long prior to his death, Mr. Dingman was president of Highland-Sarcee Oils, Limited, and had the satisfaction of seeing that company complete one of the largest naphtha producers in Turner Valley, Highwood-Sarcee No. 1, in the south end of the field. Born at Greenbush, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Archibald Wayne Dingman was a partner in a prosperous soap business in Toronto before coming to the west in 1902. Shortly after his arrival he was associated with the natural gas company at Edmonton. After ward he came to Calgary and organized the old Calgary Natural Gas Company, which drilled two wells, one on the Sarcee Indian Reserver and the other in the Col. James Walker estate in East Calgary. The Walker Estate well supplied gas for the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company in 1904 and obtained the original franchise to supply gas for the city. Streets in East Calgary were lighted by this gas, for a long period, while the well is producing some gas today. Drilled First Well - Mr. Dingman was soon attracted to Turner Valley, where he was impressed with the evidence of a potential oil field indicated by oil floating on Sheep Creek. He organized the Calgary Petroleum Products Company in 1913 and drilled the first well in Turner Valley. When oil was stuck, the famous 1914 oil boom was precipitated. The late Mr. Dingman organized the Highwood Petroleum Company in 1934 and this was later merged in the Highwood-Sarcee Oils, Limited, which brought in a large producer in south Turner Valley in 1934. Mr. Dingman had his first experience in the oil business as a very young man, in Pennsylvania. Later he was one of the partners of the Comfort Soap Company and Pugsley, Dingman and Company in Toronto. He was associated with the Scarboro Electric Railway in Toronto for several years before coming west. He was also associated with the manufacture of coaster brakes for the bicycle industry. Of United Empire Loyalist stock, Mr. Dingman was married at Napanee, Ontario, in 1882, fifty three years ago, and he is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Patteson, at home, and one son, Claude L. Dingman at home. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Douglas H. Telfer at Wesley United Church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Jaques' funeral home is in charge of funeral arrangements." from Obit, in Ruth & Emerson Smart Books, Early Settlers, Jan 5, 2004.

- Residence: 1890; 49 Huntley St., Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "I may be able to give you some info about Archie. I am an architect and journalist and I am researching Archie because he appears to be the builder of a large old Victorian building in Toronto that has for uears been a very well known ... ah ... well ... strip club. It seems that in 1890 Archibald W. Dingman spent $25,000 to build Dingman Hall, a "business block comprising four stories, bank office, and two public halls overhead". He was at that time involved in a company called Pugsley Dingman and Company, "manufacturers of soap and blues:. They were located at 18-20 Church Street here in Toronto. His home was at 49 Huntley Street, Toronto. I have his kids and wife too. What I am trying to understand is his relation to Lever soap and Sunlight Soap. Just south of Dingman Hall was Toronto's first baseball field known as Sunlight Park. The ball park has been gone for years but the land was home to Lever Soap up until about five years ago. What is the American connection? What's with trips to San Fransisco? Is my Toronto guy for sure the one who went to Alberta and financed the first oild wells? What I'd love to know is his chronology because Dingman Hall became the Broadview Hotel in 1908 - I wonder if that's when Archie went to Alberta which at that time would have just been made an official province of Canada. I had one email say that they could forward a picture - the story will be published in early January so I would need it quick. My address is 142 Glendale Avenue, Toronto, Canada, M6R 2T2. ... - Note: 14 May 1914; Sheep Creek, Alberta; Archibald Dingman and the Canadian Oil Boom; By Matt Badiali, editor, S&A Resource Report; Tuesday, October 3, 2006; Archibald W. Dingman tapped Alberta’s first “gusher” on May 14, 1914, at Sheep Creek, a desolate patch of ranchland at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies… The crude from Dingman’s well was so light and sweet that, later on, visitors to the well site would put it directly into their gas tanks for the drive home.
In the 1910s, there were only a few cowboys and not much else in that part of Canada. Seeping gas ruined Sheep Creek for drinking, but it was a natural place to drill Canada’s first oil well. Dingman was a veteran of the American oil fields. He was in charge of drilling and knew the value of experience when it came to drilling wells. In 1912, after founding the Calgary Petroleum Products Co., he brought experienced drillers and equipment in from the oil patches of Indiana and Pennsylvania.
