Location Southampton, Mass. per Gregory Pomeroy Genealogy, page 218, ancestry.ca. Date Apr 16 1764 & location South Hampton, NH per family tree of Lisa Fry on ancestry.ca, Sep 5 2018.1,2
  • Marriage*: circa 1787; Southampton, Massachusetts, U.S.A.; "vi. Sarah, b. 11 Apr. 1774; m. Silas Pomeroy, b. in Southampton, Mass., 16 Apr. 1764, son of Capt. Abner and Mary (French) Pomeroy. They had issue." Gregory Stone Genealogy, page 219 - Col. Jason Stone - Google books. per family tree of Lisa Fry on ancestry.ca, Sep 5 2018.
Note: Silas Pomeroy and Sarah Stone did not live far from each other. He in Southampton, Mass., in the middle-western area of Mass., and she almost directly north in Cheshire Co., the south west corner of New Hampshire. It is said that Abner Pomeroy moved to Plattsburgh, NY after the war. This seems to be contradicted by the birth of Children in Southampton in the years after the war. Silas and Sarah appear to have moved there as we see them in Chateaugay, Clinton Co., just a bit to the north west from Plattsburgh, in the 1800 Census, which seems to match his family very closely. Why they went on to Canada is a very good question.; Principal=Sarah Stone1
  • Death*: after 1828; Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Last Census record for Silas is 1827 in Haldimand Twp. so we can assume he died there soon afterward. Date after 1828 & location Ont. per family tree of Lisa Fry on ancestry.ca, Sep 5 2018.1
  • Residence*: circa 1784; Plattsburgh, New York, U.S.A.; "After the war they removed to Plattsburg, N. Y." https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pomeroy-992. Profile manager: Loren Fay. Profile last modified 31 Jul 2017 | Created 27 Oct 2016
Note: Plattsburgh is on the west side of Lake Champlain, about half way north. Beekmantown is a bit north of here. Plattsburgh was founded in 1785 as the Americans took over this area just south of the Canadian border after the end of the war.3
  • Note*: 1785; U.S.A.; Abner Pomeroy died in 1785. Findagrave says 1785 in one place and 1786 in another. Some trees show kids after this date with 2nd wife Mercy.???1

  • Residence: 1796; Chateaugay, Clinton Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Chateaugay was erected as a town in Clinton county from Plattsburgh and Champlain March 15, 1799, and at first included only four townships of the old Military Tract. The name was spelled "Chateuaga" in the act of incorporation. .... Within the three or four years following 1796 Lewis Ransom. Jacob Smith, Silas Pomeroy, Peleg Douglas, Thomas Smith, Jonathan and Ralph Shepard, Jabex Willev, Obed Rust, Justin Day, Amasa and Sebius Fairman, David Mallory, Aaron Beman, Elisha Howard, Gates Hoit, Samuel Stoughton, William Bailey and others arrived, so that in 1799 the population had become large enough, considering the distance to the seat of town government in Champlain, to warrant the erection of the locality into a separate town. In 1800 the inhabitants numbered 443, with an increase in 1810 to 625 notwithstanding Malone, Constable and Dickinson, with an aggregate population of 2,094, had been detached either directly or indirectly between the two periods." http://history.rays-place.com/ny/chateaugay-ny.htm
  • Census: 1800; Chateaugay, Clinton Co., New York, U.S.A.; 1800 Census: 2 males under 10; 1 male 26-44; 1 female 26-44; Total: 4 (US Federal Census: 1800, Chattaugay, Clinton Co., NY., ancestry.ca)
Note: This looks very plausible for our Silas Pomeroy. The two sons, George and Henry, were born at this time, and they were still in the US, close to Canada.
Note re location: Chattaugay per Wikipedia: "The first settlement took place in 1796. The town was formed in 1799 before Franklin County was established, from parts of the towns of Champlain and Plattsburgh. By 1802, Chateaugay comprised most of Franklin County.5
  • Residence: 1801; Chateaugay, Clinton Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Silas Pomeroy, house & farm, 300 dollars value, 10 dollar assessment, total 310" Tax Rolls 1801 for Chateaugay, Clinton Co., NY - ancestry.ca.2
  • Census: 1808; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1808 Assessment: Silas Pomeroy; 394 acres uncultivated; 6 acres cult.
Note: Silas Pomeroy does NOT appear in the associated Census records for 1806 and 1808 in Murray. He first appears in Haldimand Census records in 1812.
  • Note: 1808; Murray Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; It is interesting that Silas Pomeroy appears in two assessment records in Murray Twp., 1808 and 1810. The 1809 record is much diminished so he may be there but not visible. He does not appear in the associated Census records for these years. At the same time, the amount of land and how it is recorded is interesting as well. These numbers of cultivated and uncultivated acres are tenuous at best but do give a general trend if we can see them for a property over several years. In this case, the 1808 assessment shows 394 acres uncultivated and 6 acres cultivated. In the 1810 record, it shows simply 200 acres uncultivated. These numbers don't make sense to us but could be the result of wishful thinking or maybe some marketing, or just what one guy saw or said at a certain time. Can't take a lot from it, other than to suggest that the family may not have lived here at all. Certainly, we can tell by the Haldimand Census records from 1812 that they soon settled permanently in Haldimand. We must see the land registry records for this area at the south end of Murray, near Smithfield and Carrying Place, to determine if Silas Pomeroy was involved in any land transactions. Seeing the 200 acres, suggests a full lot, maybe as a Crown Grant. (Dan Buchanan, Sept. 7, 2018)6
  • Note: 1808; Franklin Co, New York, U.S.A.; "In 1808, Franklin County was split off from Clinton County and organized. It was named after United States Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Family: Silas Pomeroy b. 17 Apr 1763, d. a 1828

Why they went on to Canada is a very good question.; Principal=Silas Pomeroy1
