- Note*: 31 January 1827; Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "The land abstract index for Brighton shows that Rev Robert Q. Short was granted a patent from the crown for 1200 acres (located in the fifth concession lots 3,4,6,7,9,10) on 17 May 1802. The process began on 3 Nov 1796 when Rev Robt. Q Short petitioning the govt wrote in part "that your petitioner lately from ENG intending to settle in the Province of UC has brought his family consisting of a wife three boys and four girls who are now at Kingston." He lived in the parish of Three Rivers. He never lived in Brighton (Cramahe ). Other land records showed he was living in the parish of Three Rivers in the province of Lower CAN(QC). A death notice in the UC Gazette and U.E. Loyalist on Feb 17 1826 states "At Three Rivers, on 31st ult., the Rev. R. Querk Short, aged 68 years and for 26 years Rector of the Protestant Epis. Church there." Rev. Robert Q. Short's widow was Mary Wood Short who continued to sell parts of the 1200 acres in Brighton. She sold some land to William Q. Short, who immediately sold it to someone else. In the land records the middle name is given as "Quick" instead of Quirk, e.e. Rev Robert Quick Short and William Quick Short. William Q. Short also served as an attorney for Rev. Robert Q Short during other land deals. William Q. was probably a son of Robert Q and Mary W Short. 1827 - 31 JAN, Rev. RQ Short died at Trois-Rivieres, QC CAN aged 68 years. Rector of the Protestant Church (Later Saint James) for 26 years. Rev. Robert Q. - Note: 2 April 1941; Ottawa, Ontario; "NEW President; Wilfred M. Sprung; Heads C. S. ; Recreational Body; Wilfred M. Sprung, of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, was elected president of the Ottawa Civil Service Recreational Association at the annual general meeting Tuesday night in the club rooms. Mr. Sprung is one of the original founders of the association, and has for many years been a keen and active worker in young people's organizations. Born in Brighton, Ontario, Mr. Sprung is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Sprung, of Toronto. He received his education at Brighton High School and Cobourg Collegiate Institute. Coming to Ottawa in 1931, he joined the staff od the Dominion Bureau of Statistics where he is now a member of the Internal Trade Branch.
Since joining the O.C.S.R.A. he has steadfastly held out for a recreational centre and a social side to the organization. His ability to organize and his buoyant spirit won for him the unanimous choice as chairman of the club-room enterprise early in 1939, and the establishment of the present clubrooms is in large measure due to his efforts. Mr. Sprung is also a musician, and a year ago organized and conducted a Civil Service orchestra which attained considerable prominence. Complete slate of officers for 1941-42 follows: W. M. Sprung, president; W. McFall, first vice-president; J. r. Baxter second vice-president; Miss Peggy Jackson, secretary; R. Steadworthy, treasurer. Other directors: Miss Lillian Graham, C. O'Brien, J. Zoubie, K. Copeland, C. H. Claude, F. Maxwell. The first meeting of the new board is called for Thursday evening of this week.

The material he had collected re Brighton history was passed over to Wilfred Manley Sprung, and he completed the job of assembling the material into a book, with the help of editor Barbara Nyland, a hist9ry student from Queens University. The Tobey Book finally was available in the form of a large book in 1975, with several copies produced so various libraries in the area would have copies. (Dan Buchanan, Nov 25 2020)14

- Note*: 1975; Cornwall, Ontario; "FOREWORD; This publication stems from a personal hobby and undying interest in his home-town of Brighton by the late Mr. Wilmot Maxwell Tobey. Much of the material and research was prepared by this devoted gentleman whose desire it was to give to the people of Brighton a detailed story of the village and of the surrounding area from its very inception to the present day. Unfortunately, declining health prevented, the old gentleman from completing his ambitious project and following his passing, the material which he had collected and with which I had given some assistance, fell into my hands.
As time has permitted, I have endeavoured to re-assemble these writings and to personally complete the project as far as indicated by the time span covered by this volume. This story is written in chronological sequence and a considerable amount of duplication is deliberately introduced in order to connect previous events with the particular year under review. Each chapter is, as a result, complete in itself. I am sure it was Mr. Tobey's wish as well as mine that this book be presented to the people of Brighton with the provisio that since much of it cannot be duplicated or replaced, it be retained in a safe and permanent place. We hope it will be useful in bringing back recollections of many of the persons who have long since departed from the town. Permission is granted to use this material or re-publish the anecdotes in any way deemed advisable or of public interest. It is a pleasure to present this history to the people of Brighton.
(Signature of Wilfred M. Sprung Cornwall, Ontario" this is the Foreword at the beginning of The Tobey Book.
Note: Both Wilmot Maxwell Tobey and Wilfred Manly Sprung were born in Brighton and then moved to Ottawa, were married there and had their careers in the civil service. Mr. Sprung says that he had assisted with the gathering of some of the material and when Mr. Tobey died in 1959, the project came to him.14
