- Note*: 8 June 1859; Jail, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Prison Scenes; “On Wednesday pm the 8th June, I visited the Dr. in his cell in company with Geo. J. of Brighton;” And later… ; “During the time of my stay in prison the Dr. spoke very earnestly about seeing Mr. and Mrs. Lawson, that night by 12 o’clock, not to talk over the past, but to have a mutual forgiveness passed between them. He solicited Mr. J. to telegraph them, which he did; they did not get the telegram until dark, and the reply was that the notice was too short, at which the Dr. seemed much disappointed.” These quotes are from "Prison Scenes" written by Reuben Decourcy after he had visited Dr. William Henry King at the Cobourg Jail on the night before Dr. King was to be hung for poisoning his wife. Decourcy does not give the full name, but says he was accompanied by "Geo. J. of Brighton" and then "Mr. J." telegraphed the Lawson's at the request of Dr. King. Looking at the 1861 Census for Brighton Village, there are no similar names, but in Brighton Township we see G. S. Johnson who happens to be the right age and a Carpenter in Brighton at the time. His location is Conc 3, Lot 3, south of Hilton. This is very likely the fellow who accompanied Decourcy that night.

- Note*: 7 September 1917; Chatham, Kent, England; "INTERESTING LETTER FROM DONALD MCCONNELL; South Hill Barracks, Chatham, Kent, Sept. 7, 1917; Dearest Mother: Well at last I am settled down to the old routine. I am driving a three ton Lorrie, the same kind of a bus I drove in E. Africa. We do all kinds of transport work around the town. We have to keep our cars shining like a mirror and as we draw coal a good share of the time it is some task to keep them up to the mark. Some nights it is 7:30 when we finish and I can tell you 1 am ail in and glad to go straight to the old kip. We had a decent little air raid here last night, one of the worst that has ever been in England. lt is the first time the Huns have ever raided this place. Three bombs dropped about 400 yds from this camp and it jarred us up pretty severely. Some of the guys nearly went crazy and went dashing around the tent in great style. We have a crazy Scotchman in our tent, he wanted to run but we shoved him back in the tent. He says he doesn't mind how often they come as long as they don't wake him up. The raid commenced about 11.15 and was all cleared away by 11.30 but it is surprising what an immense amount of damage they can do in in a short time. The bombs dropped right in a room where 300 sailors were sleeping, 147 were killed and 100 wounded. I had to take my Lorrie and help bury the poor fellows next day, that was the saddest task I have had yet. It was such a bright moonlight night the gunners could not find the planes to fire on them, so they got away without a scratch. This makes four air raids I have been through so I should be getting used to them but I can't say that I think them very pleasant, fellow can't dodge a bomb very handily. In the morning we found that one bomb had dropped, within 25 yards of our tent but did not explode which was most fortunate for us.
This is a rotten town, very dirty, but we always go up to Rochester when we go out for the evening. It is a very nice little town, and in it is an old fort which was built by the Normans, a real old one, right out of the history pictures. We have a little clique hero four of us, a Scotchman, an Englishman, a Welshman .and a Canadian (myself). Three have been to E. Africa and one to Mesapotamia. None of the other fellows here have ever been out of England. We planned to go down to service in the Cathedral at Rochester …. - Residence*: circa 1930; Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.; "Don and Frank; They had known each other since they were little more than toddlers, had sat side-by-side in church and Sunday school, but it was in high school that their friendship was truly cemented. Don was no slouch academically, but Frank was smart as a whip - two whips - and though he was 23 months Don’s junior, they were in the same class. They graduated in 1915. Don could scarcely wait for his eighteenth birthday that October. He would be a soldier. Frank was not about to let his friend embark on this adventure without him. Though barely sixteen, he too joined up - quite illegally. But there was a lot of winking by Officialdom at that time in that regard.
They sailed for England for training and there became separated. Frank was to spend his war in Europe, but Don was seconded into the Ambulance Corps - and was to remain there as things fell out - and ended up as an ambulance driver in equatorial Africa. He suffered bouts of malaria and stomach ailments which would trouble him the rest of his life. He used to tell how, once, he lay in a field hospital “too sick to move and too weak to groan, when an Irish priest stopped at the foot of my cot I summoned up enough strength to say to him, ‘I’m sorry, Father, I’m not of your Faith’ - The man had an elfin face and a brogue to soothe the savage seas - and he exclaimed, ‘What! With a name like yours and those Irish blue eyes and not a Catholic? A damn pity to be sure!’”
When the hostilities ended, Frank came home and went to university. And, seasoned warrior though he was, he was still younger than many of his classmates. But Don, returning to England before being de-mobbed, met an English Rose and brought home a war bride. So, no higher education for him. He needed work. He farmed with his Dad for a while, but when the Ontario Provincial Police were created to chase down the rum runners plying the river between Windsor and Detroit, he answered the call and became one of the original members of that force. “Hah!” (He was to tell us later) ‘The bootleggers outnumbered us ioo to i. Their boats were bigger, better and faster. I lasted six months. On the day they started to shoot at me, that was the day I handed in my resignation. I didn’t mind being shot at in the war. You expected that. But I didn’t figure I wanted to dodge bullets in my own country or even on its doorstep.”
He moved on to Detroit became an American citizen and drove a bus for the Detroit Street Railway for 36 years. However, his American remains are buried in Canadian soil; right here in Mount Hope cemetery, in fact in the family plot For Don was my uncle, my father’s older brother. He had read more books than any man I have ever met Dad once remarked that he was kind of surprised that Don was even there for his own funeral. Said he always figured he’d be in the bathroom, reading, and miss the whole thing.
And Frank? Well, Frank remained “smart as a whip” his whole life. He became a dentist a leading citizen of his town, a minion of his church and community. And he could, I swear, on foot cover the 150 yards of Young Street between his residence and his office in only about a second or two more than Donavan Bailey would require. He became, he was, Dr. F.H. (Frank) Dunnett; 24 September 1997" from "Don and Frank", pg. 25 & 26, in the book "Over My Shoulder, An Anthology of Brighton Memories", by Peter J.
