- Note*: between 1775 and 1783; U.S.A.; "Settled in Prince Edward county, Ontario, about 1818. He had served in the Revolutionary War, probably in the British army, as the following concessions were granted to his children because he was a United Empire Loyalist. The United Empire Loyalists," were those who, at the close of the Revolutionary War, left the colonies and emigrated to Canada, where they were given free grants of land. Several hundred of them went to Prince Edward county." To be a United Empire Loyalist, one "must have sided with the Tories in the Revolution. Lands were sometimes granted to the descendants of Loyalists. The Loyalists were good stock; it was they who made upper Canada, and to this day to be a descendant of a United Empire Loyalist is in Ontario what is in Massachusetts to be a descendant of a Mayflower Pilgrim". The fact that many descendants of Samuel Pettingell are to be found in Ontario, taken into consideration with these grants, would seem to indicate that there was a Tory branch in this family during the Revolution C.I.P. (p 508, A Pettingell Genealogy (1906))" per GEDCOM of Leonard Parren, Nov. 10, 2006.2
- Note: 6 August 1777; Battle of Oriskany, Tyron Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Samuel Pettingell: killed at the battle of Oriskany, Aug 6, 1777; married Elizabeth Cline, who was born in Holland, Europe, and died March 9, 1790. Samuel was a doctor." per GEDCOM of Lenonard Parren, on www.rootsweb.com, 2006 1 10.
Note: IF this Samuel Pettingill is the son of Capt. Samuel Pettingill who died in 1777 at the Battle of Oriskany, this provides context for young Samuel who was 13.2 - Note: 1781; Mohawk River, Tyron Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Likely the Jno Service who made a remarkable scout to the Mohawk R. in '81 & return'd w/6 rcts. Note: This suggests that John Serviss may have recruited Jacob and Samuel Pettingill, from his community in Florida, Tyron Co., NY. They would return home after the war and he would marry their sister, Catherine Pettingtill. This is to some degree speculation, but it could be the means by which Samuel and Jacob became fighters for the British, even though their father, Capt. Samuel Pettingill, fought withthe Tyron Militia and was killed in the Battle of Oriskany in 1777. Both Samuel and Jacob Pettingill would later be named for Crown Grants in Fredericksburgh and Samuel's sons would be able to site his name on the "Loyalist List" in order to obtain land grants for themselves in Hillier Twp. in the 1830s. - Residence: 26 August 1781; Pettingill Home, Tyron Co., New York; "His house was burned by the Johnson raiders, October 25, 1781. His death had left his family destitute, as three days before the battle in which he was killed he had buried his money, which was never found. The winter after the house burned the widow and children lived in the cellar hole, possessed only of what they could find in the ruins." per GEDCOM of Lenonard Parren, on www.rootsweb.com, 2006 1 10.2
- Note: 1784; Montgomery Co., New York; "In 1784, following end of the American Revolutionary War, the European-American settlers renamed Tryon County as Montgomery County. This change was to honor the general, Richard Montgomery, who had captured several places in Canada and died in 1775 attempting to capture the city of Quebec during the Revolutionary War. It replaced the name that formerly honored the last provincial governor of New York." from Wikipedia.
- Residence: 1784; Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; Loyalist List: "Pattingall, Jacob, Fredericksburgh, German Soldier, C. B. Stamp Book; Pattingall, Samuel, do, R. R. N. Y. B.M.A." The Old United Empire Loyalist List, Appendix B., copy of old U. E. List preserved in the Crown Lands Department at Toronto - Ontario Registers CD.
Note: Based on several Crown Land Petitions re the children of Samuel Pettingill, the Samuel mentioned here is the same guy. Maybe Jacob is a brother??
Note: This also suggests that Jacob and Samuel Pattingall were German mercenary soldiers brought to North America by the British to fight in the War of Independence. Which also means they were not from Florida Twp., Montgomery Co., NY????5 - Note: 2 June 1785; Tyron Co., New York, U.S.A.; "June 2, 1785, John, Jacob, Samuel, Joseph and William Pettingell signed separate orders dated at Warrensbush (Warrensburg) to have their pay paid to Gilbert Rosem Berry. Each spelled the name "Pettingell." per GEDCOM of Lenonard Parren, on www.rootsweb.com, 2006 1 10.2
- Census*: 1790; Mohawk Twp., Montgomery Co., New York, U.S.A.; 1790 Census: Samuel Pettingill; 1 male over 16; 1 male under 16; 2 females (ancestry.com, pg. 4 or 10)6
- Note: 1790; The two 1790 Census and Residence tags suggest that we are dealing with two different Samuel Pattingill's. Or are we? Is it possible that this same Samuel Patingal who owns 100 acres of land located at Conc 1 Lot 20, Fredericksburgh Twp., is the same one shown in the 1790 Census in Mohawk Twp., Montgomery Co., went back to live with his wife and kids in Florida Twp. - and then came to Hillier in 1818? I find all that to be highly unlikely; if he was known at all to be related to Royalist forces, he would likely not be allowed to stay there so late.3
- Residence: 1790; Conc 1 Lot 20, Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; 1790 Mecklenburg List of Land Owners: Name: Corp. Samuel Patingal; Township: Fredericksburgh; Location: Conc 1, Lot 20, 100 acres
Note: Jacob Patingal is listed with Samuel, on Conc 4 (Additional) Lot 4, 100 acres3 - Note: 1 December 1797; Conc 1 Lot 20, Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; Crown Deeds, Fredericksburgh: Name: Pettingil, Jacob, Corp'l. et al; Date: Dec 1 1797; Location: Conc 1, Lot 20, East Half, 200 acres (from www.sfredheritage.on.ca/crowndeedsAZ.html)
Note: Samuel is not mentioned in this list. - Residence: 1 December 1797; Conc 1 Lot 20, Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox & Addington Co., Upper Canada; Land Registry Records show that Corp'l Pettingil at al received the Crown Grant for all 200 acres of Lot 20, Conc 1, Fredericksburgh, dated Dec 1 1797 (Reel GSU 198116, Ontario Archives)
Note: The next transaction (D 626) for Lot 20 is dated Feb 22 1827 and does not include any Pettingill's. It shows John Bush Jr., obtained a Life Lease from John Bush for 100 acres of the East half of Lot 20.
Note: The location of this lot is on the south shore of South Fredericksburgh Twp., towards the east border of the township. In the County Atlas Map it appears just under the U of Fredericksburgh with the current owners shown as Geo Clapper, Stewart Craven and Lewis Grant.7 - Census: 1803; Florida Twp., Montgomery Co., New York, U.S.A.; "Samuel Pettingall, 50, 50, 100, 10" 1803 Assessment Rolls, Florida Twp., Montgomery Co., NY, ancestry.ca.

- Note: 9 April 1811; Conc 1 Lot 20, Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennos & Addington Co., Upper Canada; There is a document in the collection called "Upper Canada Land Book I 1811-1816", pg. 50 & 60 which appears to be the transaction which takes the lot allocated to Samuel and Jacob Pettingtill in Fredericksburgh Twp. back in 1797, and frees it up to be allocated to someone else. The document is very faint and hard to make out, so can't be definitive, but it looks like part of the lot went to Timothy Thompson who would collect many lots at this time, including a lot at Newcastle (Presqu'ile) where he would be appointed Customs Agent, just a year or so before the Speedy sank and the county town status was lost. Obviously, Samuel and Jacob Pettingtill did not follow up on their Crown Grant in Fredericksburgh and the authorities were forced to re-allocate it to someone who wanted the land to farm. This document found at the Ontario Archives, Upper Canada Land Book on microphilm.
