• Note: circa 1788; Province of Quebec; Certainly! Picton, originally named Hallowell, was first settled in the 1780s by Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies. Prior to its incorporation in 1837, the modern-day town of Picton consisted of two separate villages, Hallowell Bridge and Picton, which occupied the opposite sides of Picton Bay12. It was founded by loyalists led by Andrew and Henry Johnson and later renamed for Sir Thomas Picton, a British major general who served during the Napoleonic Wars1. There was also one white man who did courier work. He was Andres Johnson. His route included Adolphustown, Picton, Wellington, The Carrying Place, and thence across the lakeshore fording streams as best he could, often on a fallen tree or by swimming.
