Thomas Rixon emigrated to the US when he was a very young man from Kent, England, his name a legacy of his Huguenot ancestors in France, who left France to escape Catholic persecution in the 17th century (see Massacre of St. Bartholomew). Following USA cessation from England, he came to Canada to settle near Brighton, Ont. and became a member of the United Empire Loyalist Party. He remained throughout his adult life a very “dandified” Englishman, always appearing in his “top” hat, spats, gloves and cane and, although quite poor, always a “gentleman.” LMF.
