(Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Colborne Village, Book 001, pg. 012 of 254, page copied from OnLand.ca by Dan Buchanan, Mar 4 2021.)11 He lived circa 1944 at 40 Parliament St., Colborne, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "House bought by Charles and Martha Goodfellow after moving from Percy Street." per email from Howard Goodfellow, 2024 02 20, with image of 40 Parliament St., Colborne.
Note: I have found no land registry records that link Charles James Goodfellow to 40 Parliament Street. I'd love to be corrected on this, but consider the following: Book 009 of the Colborne Land Registry Records contain records for Concession 2, Lot 28, labelled on the map as "Scott & Spencer's Plan", because the southern part of it is west of Spencer Street and east of Durham Street. Most of the Village Lots are either along the north side of Scott Street or south of it. Note that the 1878 map called the north-south street Furnace St. and not Parliament. That is because of Reuben Scott's foundry on the creek here. The modern property called 40 Parliament Street is the second house south of Scott Street, on the east side of Parliament. On the map, it is clear that this is Village Lot 29. Oddly, lots 29, 30, 31 and 32 are never mentioned in the pages of Book 009. The corner lots of 26, 27 and 28 are mentioned a few times, as well as 33 which is farther south at the pond, but never the four lots in between. This seems bizarre and I looked over the details several times to make sure I did not miss anything. The map seems very clear although there may have been some kind of unusual naming convention or administrative step that results in this. Really, it is very annoying. I look forward to some advice from anyone who might be able to shed light on this. (Dan Buchanan, Feb 26 2024.)11 He The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington includes a picture and article as follows: "Wed 57 years - Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goodfellow of Colborne area today celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. The couple lived in Brighton Township until he retired from farming nineteen years ago. At 87 (actually 80), both are in good health and taking an active interest in the community. William Goodfellow M.P.P. is a son."
Note: Marriage was in 1887 so 57 years makes this 1944. The two are 80 or 81, not 87 as stated. Retirement works out to 1925 (19 years before 1944) on 20 April 1944 at Cramahe Twp., Colborne, Northumberland Co., Ontario.15 He died on 19 February 1950 at Seymour Twp., Campbellford, Northumberland Co., Ontario, at age 85; "Goodfellow: Passed away Sunday, February 19, 1950, in his 86th year, Charles James Goodfellow, beloved husband of Martha Valleau and father of William, Cecil and Bertha (Mrs. B. (Dan Buchanan, May 8 2025) on 24 September 1927 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario.4 He "A memory of him as he entered the counties council chamber for the first business session of January 1929 retains the immediate impression of some air of distinction that caught and held attention. It suggested strength and depth of character, a balanced personality, something rugged and enduring about him, and not easily swayed. When there was committee work to do, such as striking the tax rate and other details of arithmetic, Mr. Goodfellow was on of the willing workers with associates like Percy Stinson, George Hooton, Fred Lovekin and various others." from The Tweedsmuir Histories, newspaper article by Harry Theobald, Peterborough Examiner (I230), when Bill Goodfellow appointed Minister of Agriculture in 1956. in January 1929 at Counties Council, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario. He Bill Goodfellow appears in The Latimer Photos which were taken by Hugh Latimer during the late 1920s and early 1930s at his father's General Store in Orland. (Ontario Land Registry Records, Northumberland Co., Brighton Twp., Conc 8, pg. 169 of 192, Lot 33, pg. 3, page copied from OnLand.ca, Feb 20 2021.)9 He Phill Goodfellow told me after Dad died (June 16 2012) that Charles had come to the Goodfellow farm in 1940 at age 15 because his father believed that at age 15 there had been enough schooling and a young man should start working. At that time, that was the age you could leave school. This means that Charles had been at the Goodfellow farm for two years when his uncle Bill was elected as an MPP. Phil explains that both Bill Goodfellow and Charles Buchanan regretted later in life their limited education. Charles felt it when he started to deal with other ministers who had university educations and Bill experienced it during his time in Cabinet. In each case, common sense and "people skills" were much better assets than a diploma. It also adds extra meaning to the time Bill Goodfellow saw Rev. Charles Buchanan after he was ordained and told him how proud he was that there was a minister in the family. Dad told me that story many times, with an extra edge to his voice. (Dan Buchanan) in 1940 at Goodfellow Farm, Brighton Twp., Mount Olivet, Northumberland Co., Ontario.10 He W. A. Goodfellow is shown as the "Division Registrar" on a Death Registration for Eula Horsley, daughter of Joseph Henry Horsley and Jenny Fraser of Hilton. on 3 October 1942 at Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario.11 He When Bill Goodfellow was elected MPP for Northumberland in 1943, his nephew, Charles Buchanan, came to live on the farm and work as the Hired Man. He had been visiting with his family in Northumberland county on the preceding weekend, and seemed in good health. Mr. Goodfellow was MPP for twenty years from 1943 to 1963, and served as cabinet minister in several ministries including public welfare, municipal affairs, agriculture and highways. "He was a great Canadian," said Howard Sheppard, present Northumberland MPP, who grew up near Mr. Goodfellow in Brighton township. Dr. Fred Robertson, former Northumberland Liberal MP, said, "He was an easy man to work with, and I held him in great admiration." Born in Brighton Township, August 18, 1901, Mr. Goodfellow's parents were Chas. J. Goodfellow and Martha Valleau. He attended Warkworth High School and Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph, then farmed in Brighton Township. "Goodfellow, William Arthur; (Cabinet Minister of the Province of Ontario, 1946-1963). At the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, Ontario on Tuesday, May 10, 1983, aged 81 years. Formerly married to Dora Philp. Beloved husband of Barbara Calderwood. Loving father of Joy (deceased), Shirley (Mrs. James Bird, Brighton), Phyllis (Mrs. J. Moriarty, Peterborough), Ada (Mrs. W. Lelliott, Cobourg), C. Philp of Pembroke. Dear step-father of Barbara (Mrs. J. D. Keppy, Burlington). In his belief that memories should be of the living, and not of the dead, there will be no service." from a newspaper clipping passed to me by Shirley (Taylor) Buchanan, Nov 2012, part of papers of my father, Rev. Charles Buchanan.
"Dad died in either a Hamilton or Burlington hospital, not in Florida. When it was time for he & Barb to drive back to Ontario from Florida in the spring of 1983, he admitted to a general weakness as a result of several ‘spells’ (probably mini heart attacks) during the winter. As a result, my sister Ada flew to Florida, got them back to Toronto by air, and started driving their car back to Ontario (I met her in Atlanta and we had a ball driving back together). The weekend before he died, he requested his 4 living children to gather at Shirley & Jim’s where we spent a great time listening to him reminisce (why didn’t we tape it!?!). And then he was gone - without any suffering!" (per email from Phil Goodfellow, Nov 15 2011)
Death Notice in Tweedsmuir Histories: "News of the recent death of William A. Goodfellow, MLA for Northumberland from 1943 to 1963 will recall to those who lived through the period he was serving this area that he was one of those outstanding public servants the area has been fortunate to have represent its ridings. .... He retired from politics and enjoyed a long retirement, first operating a motel in Florida and then simply taking life easier." Day of death from Shirley Bird
Note: "By the way, the Tweedsmuir Histories are mistaken when they claim that Dad operated a motel in Florida - he wintered in Florida in 2 different facilities which kind of resembled motels for the 20 years of his retirement, but didn’t own or manage them (he would have had a great hoot over that rumour!)." per email from Phil Goodfellow, Nov 15 2011.5,13 He was buried on 23 May 1983 at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario; Memorial: (See Exhibit) GOODFELLOW; W. Note: Not absolutely sure of the place name - it's very faint -but this is the closest I can come. It's south-east Prince Edward County, the bay where Milford sits. in 1853 at South Marysburgh Twp., Prince Edward Co., Canada West. He "The eldest son William, who married Ann Ames, and Charles, John and James, went to California to work in the gold mines to earn money to buy a farm." from As The Crow Flies by Mrs. Leona M. Austin, Mika Publishing, 1975 in 1859 at Gold Mines, California, U.S.A.. He "Following the discovery of gold and silver on the nearby Comstock Lode in 1859, Carson City's population began to rise. Curry (Abraham Curry) built the crude Warm Springs Hotel a mile to the east of downtown. ... Nevada became a state in 1864, Carson City was confirmed as permanent capital. ... The Comstock Lode was the first major U.S. deposit of silver ore discovered under what is now Virginia City, Nevada on the eastern slope of Mt. Davidson, a peak in the Virginia range. After the discovery was made public in 1859, prospectors rushed to the area and scrambled to stake their claims. Mining camps soon thrived in the vicinity, which became bustling centers of fabulous wealth. The excavations were carried to depths of more than 3,200 feet (1,000 m). Between 1859 and 1878, it yielded about $400 million in silver and gold." from Wikipedia in 1859 at Comstock Lode, Carson City, Ormsby Co., Nevada, U.S.A.. He was California Gold Rush: see John Goodfellow Story: "In the spring of '59 a Yankee cousin made his yearly visit to Canada. …… until all the ?? had gathered in the train. "Gold has been discovered in California", he said. "Thousands of nuggets have been picked up along river banks. John heard and knew his problems were solved. Note: The transaction was not registered until Mar 20 1861. It would have happened while son John as in California.7 He "A year later his brothers, Charles and James, arrived (1861), but by the time they reached John, the gold was becoming scarcer. After a disappointing year the brothers went home. They left, taking some more of savings to deposit in the account. John spent a few more months going from river to river searching for better digging." per "My Great Grandfather was a "59er" by Ellen Campbell, copied from The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington. in 1861 at Sacramento, California, U.S.A.. He lived in 1863 at Silver Mine, Carson City, Ormsby Co., Nevada, U.S.A; "In the spring of '63 he and his companion decided to leave California for greener fields. They had heard that silver mines were beyond the mountains in Nevada. The 2 miners made a hazardous trip through the mountain trails of the Sierra Nevada. They soon came to a large mining camp where Carson City is now located. Large quantities of silver were being dug from this mine at 1,800 feet below the surface. Because the prospects looked so good, John and his friend made up their minds to work there. Next morning when they were interviewed by the foreman, they learned a timekeeper was needed. Because John had a fairly good education, he was able to take this job. He liked this work and it paid well. Perhaps now he would soon earn enough to return home." per "My Great Grandfather was a "59er" by Ellen Campbell, copied from The Tweedsmuir Histories of Codrington.6 He lived in 1867 at Silver Mine, Carson City, Ormsby Co., Nevada, U.S.A; "The time-keeper at the Nevada Mine continued to work faithfully to build up his savings.
