Around Town - Main Intersection
A request was made to provide historical displays at the main intersection in Brighton and I did the research on all three areas. First was the corner north of Main and west of Young, where Sobeys is today, then, the second part across Main west of Prince Edward Street. The third part is along Prince Edward Street from Dundas to the Morrow Block. In the process of this work, a lot more info re many early business people in Brighton came to the surface. There is much better info for the Sanford family businesses, especially the hotel at that corner.
Around Town - Young St. East Side
Any idea that this might be simple was dashed very quickly. The complexities re the corner of Dundas and Young were enough to give me more gray hairs. However, in the end, I have a much better knowledge of the two buildings there over time and the many different tenants in the many commercial spaces. The same complexities continued north on Young as larger commercial buildings had many tenants over time and had fires to disrupt things. Many people not yet documented were added because of this work and there is a lot more info re the businesses people had and where. Just as a sample, the first Brintnell funeral home was here for a number of years before a fire sent them up Main Street. Also, this is where Ralph Bangay learned his plumbing from his father, Herbert, who ran a plumbing business here. Up the street, the big impressive Dean House came to life during the process and the Dean presence in this area is now much better documented. The lovely houses up the street hosted different folks from the community over the years, some for retirees and some for business people who had shops down the street. The west side of Young will be next.
