Note: October 6, 1906 was a Saturday.
"Killed on Trolley. First Fatal Accident on Rochester, Syracuse & Eastern Occurred Saturday Evening, Near Macedon. Herbert Skinkle was instantly killed, Saturday Evening, by car 114, on the Rochester, Syracuse & Eastern trolley, 500 feet west of Macedon sub-station. The unfortunate man was driving on the tracks coming on the right of way at Stop 23. A heavy rain-storm was in progress and everything was inditinct at the time. Mr. Skinkle was driving a one-horse buffy. The car struck the horse and rig and pushed them ahead forty or fifty feet before the car could be stopped. The man's head was crushed to a jelly. His identity was discovered by mail in his pockets. The buggy was demolished and the horse instantly killed. The came to a standstill and the body was removed from the tracks. The broken headlight, which was smashed in the collission with the buggy, delayed the car for an hour. Relief was summonded and on its arrival the remains of the unfortunate man were carried to the Macedon sub-station to await the arrival of Coroner Jennings who was notified. Mr. Detlon of Rochester, was the motorman. He sounded his whistle as soon as he discovered an object on the track and had not thought of any accident. The trouble caused a blockade and congestion of traffic from 8 to 9:30 p.m. This is the first accident on the new road since it began making regular trips. The passengers on the car were much excited, but did not al the time realize what had occurred." copied from ancestry.ca, Feb 28 2024.
