FindaGrave: Name: Elisha Alger; BIRTH: 2 Aug 1746, Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, USA; DEATH: 18 May 1825 (aged 78), Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada; BURIAL: Colborne Union Cemetery, Colborne, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada; MEMORIAL ID: 74396154; Note: He was the twin of Nathaniel and they were the first born children of Lydia Hudson, the second wife of Jonathan Alger of Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, USA. He was a Quaker but his parents and siblings may not have been. He was also a spy for the British during the Revolutionary War, probably while he was living in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The First U. S. Census of 1790 find him living in New York State. Sometime after that (around 1796) he went to Canada and petitioned for land based on his services to the British during the American Revolutionary War and was awarded 200 acres where he had a farm. He had one son, Peter, and eight daughters. His wife was Sarah Locy or Lacy or Lucy and he may have married her in New York colony in 1768.
His twin brother Nathaniel followed him to Canada after the Revolutionary War was over. His brother, William B. Alger, born in 1748 in Lyme, Connecticut was a Lieutenant in the War on the Patriot side in Dutchess County, New York. His brother, Jonathan Alger, Jr.. born in 1750 at Lyme, Connecticut who married Deborah Garrison of Dutchess County, New York, signed the Oath of Loyalty to the rebel Patriot side in Dutchess County during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Vermont after the war was over. There were other younger siblings and older siblings of the half blood. I am descended from Levi Alger, one of the children of Jonathan Alger, Jr. and Deborah Garrison.; Source: Lee Millington, Oct 26 2019. The ledger is dated 1775. Robert believes that Elisha was in Cramahe, Northumberland Cty. Ontario by this date. Of course this is ridiculous because the area was not settled until much later. Elisha received land as a United Empire Loyalist in 1796. He was living at Cramahe by the earliest census of 1803. The ledger contains notations of Elisha's business as a shoemaker. It also contains the birth dates of all his children and the death dates of the 2 girls who died in NY. We also have Elisha's will and his land petitions for land as a loyalist. To the young swain it was a great occassion to drive to the fair with a spanking team in order to obtain the attention of his desired fiancee. There was business for the farmer on each day of the four day affair. The first day was spent discussing the improvement of crops and stocks and this was when the judging took place. On the second day the prizes were distributed. On the third day there was a ploughing match to decide the district championship and on the fourth day horse races took place.
