OBIT: "Reading And Fishing; Lose Enthusiast By; Death Of Local Man; Alter suffering from a stroke for four days, Frederick Willis Goddard passed to his eternal rest May 21, 1939, in his 63rd year. He was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. LeBaron Goddard, Elgin, New Brunswick. "'Deac" as he was familiarly known to his many friends, had a genial personality and kindly disposition.
He was an employee of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for the past seventeen years. Born in Elgin, N.B., January, 1877, he married Laura Falle of Belleville in 1899. Alter their marriage, they returned to New Brunswick, and later located in Bowmanville where he was employed with the late F. A. Haddy, grocer, in the store now occupied by W. C. Caverly. In 1922 he began working at the Goodyear plant where be had been employed as shipping clerk till the time of his passing.
Fishing was one of his greatest joys and a pastime in which he derived much recreation and pleasure. Books were another hobby in which he found considerable enjoyment and satisfaction.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and I.O.O.F. In New Brunswick and the Eastern Star Lodge here. The members of the latter lodge attended the funeral of their late Worthy Patron In a body. In religion he was a Baptist. A Conservative in polities, he was an active worker tor his party and an officer in the local association.
The funeral was held from his late residence, service being conducted by Rev. S. Davison of Trinity United Church. Interment took place at Bowmanville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. A. M. Hardy, W. H. Thickson, H. M. Nansen, D. R. Morrison, C. H. Cattran and T. E. Prout.
Among those attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker, and Miss A. Goddard, Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. D. Harrison, Laura and Alice. and Mr. L. Yerex, Trenton; Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carter and Marguerite, Belleville; and Mr. N. R. Wiere, Oshawa.
Floral tributes were beautiful, among them being wreaths from: Swift Canadian Company, Montreal; Goodyear Recreation Club; I.0.0.F.; Goodyear Stock and Shipping Room; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.; Factory Council of Goodyear Company; Eastern Star; Dept. No. 273 of Goodyear; 1st Bowmanville Rangers; and Export and Traffic Departments of Goodyear Company, New Toronto.
He leaves to mourn his loss three sons, Herbert and Lawrence Goddard of Bowmanville, Ted Goddard of Montreal, and one daughter, Evelyn of Bowmanville. His wife predeceased him in April 1936.
