  • Occupation: 1958; 128 Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Twenty years bring many changes to local scene. A clirectory of local business men appearing in the Brighton Ensign in 1938 reveals that only 6 remain in business today. The veterans, of course, in local business circles arc Harry Frise with a record of 60 years as a dry goods merchant, and Fred Wright, 42 years in the garage business. Mr. Frise and M.H. Johnson are the two remaining of the four dry goods merchants in business here 20 years ago. Mr. Wright is the sole survivor of the six garage men operating locally in 1938. Not one of the six grocery men listed at that time is in business today. There were five restaurants two decades ago but none is under the same management today. James Hales listed both as a service station operator and shoe repairman, still carries on in both lines. He enjoys a monopoly of the local shoe repair business today, and his former competitors in the service station field have all departed." from page 356 & 357, History of Brighton Businesses by Susan Brose.12
  • Note: circa 1960; 128 Main St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Recollections of Jimmy Hale, Another Shoe Repair Man By Rose Marie (Cheer) Ellery; Another gentleman in the business of repairing shoes was Jimmy Hale, previously mentioned in Norman Cheer's memoirs. His shop was at the other end of the village, located just to the east of the present Walas Funeral Home at 124 Main Street. His shop was very small, and located very close to the sidewalk, and their white frame home was just to the north (with stain glass over the two large front windows). This little shop now sits just to the north of Proctor House. Jimmy was a small gentleman in stature, but great in heart, and that cute smile, and twinkle in his eyes was always evident.
I remember him with small tacks between his lips and carrying on a conversation with the locals. As a young student, I, with friends who lived in that area, would go after school for a visit. After the usual conversation, we would often buy a soft drink in a glass bottle or a chocolate bar for about five to seven cents and our day was made. He was always kind and seemed interested in our tales. This was also a place for the local folk to catch up on the daily news of the village, discuss politics and the state of the world. Many a student was late for an early dinner because they had stopped in at "Jimmy Hale's" shop for just a "minute". But in those days, there was not the same concern with young folk if you were a few minutes late, as we were all creatures of habit and did not vary much in a day. Both these gentlemen went about their work with a smile, and lived a good simple life. Jimmy was married to wife Alice, (Ally) and had one son, Jack, well- known in the area for the love of always having the latest, shiniest vehicle in Brighton. This was his true love!" from page 285 of "That's Just The Way We Were: Brighton Memories".13
