- Note*: before 28 December 1913; Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.; "DR. EMMA E. Musson. On Sunday morning Dec. 28th, 1913, there passed away from this our world one of those spirits that help to keep up our faith in a divine spark. Dr, Emma E. Musson, the eminent throat specialist, died of pneumonia at her residence, 1709 Pine street, Philadelphia. She was one of those quiet, hard working, modest women whose entire pleasure lies in doing. After she graduated from the Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia, she devoted herself entirely' to her profession, and her natural gifts, as well as her knowledge and skill as an operator, soon built up for her a large practice. Dr. Clarence J. Blake, the leading Boston aurist, and other physicians sent her many patients. At the time of her death, she was clinical professor of otology at the Woman's Medical College, and otologist and laryngologist to the Woman's Hospital. A beautiful tribute to her personality and medical wisdom was paid her by Miss Agnes Repplier, who said that to Dr. Musson she owed the possibility of lecturing. Had it not been for her skill and her care she must have given up this part of work. She was a woman of great personal charm-beautiful, simple. Sincere. She had conquered her field of usefulness, having attained not only success, but achievement. She had reached the age of 52 years, and had won the respect of all the men of her profession, and clearly demonstrated what lies in the power of women. There was no aggressiveness about her, no undue desire for fame, no self-seeking effort, no- forging ahead to reach the limelight; but she seemed consumed with a yearning to serve, and serve she did to the very last. On Sunday, December 20, just one week before she died, already feeling most ill, she performed a radical mastoid operation on a patient, who is recovering while she lies dead. Truly, one of those Ironies of fate that impress one with the futility of looking into the future. She also finished an important article which she had been I requested to write for Doctor Sajou's "Medical Encyclopaedia" on Bronchoscopy and Aesophagoscopy," which she was anxious to complete. Then she laid-down and gave herself up to the fell disease that even then had her in its clutches and only released her to death. It was Doctor Musson who, in the summer of 1909, went with her assistant, Doctor Clark, to Labrador at the call of Doctor Grenfell, whom Dr. H. H. Furness called the leading philanthropist of the age. She went at her own expense to treat or to operate upon many of his people at the St. Anthony Hospital. The conditions under which those fishermen lived, suffered and died had been so appealingly described by Doctor Grenfell as to excite her pity. Her approach had been heralded along the coast and all who were troubled with dieases of the throat or ear had come for treatment. On her arrival, so many were awaiting her that Doctor Wakefield, in charge of the hospital, set her to work at once. Until 10 p.m. on that day they continued examining and treating 55 patients before she took a rest.
It was bitterly cold, the thermometer hovering around 32 degrees below zero, the nights were trying and a gale rocked the building. Daily, operations occupied the morning hours. In the afternoons she held clinics, when she saw from 10 to 15 patients. The sterilizing outfit was the kitchen stove, at which she also thawed her frozen fingers and toes. After all the patients, who had come from afar, had been attended to she examined the children from the orphanage and the village, so many of whom required operations that she and her assistant were hard at it for two weeks more, averaging but four operations in a morning, owing to the absence of proper sterilizing facilities. The evenings were spent in minor operations, surgical dressings, etc." from pg. 020 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donated by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022.5

"(top cut off) ... Millar in the eighty-fourth year of his age. Funeral on Tuesday, April 6th, to Forest Lawn Mausoleum.
Born at East Bogue farm, Lanark County, near Stonehouse, Scotland, on October 17th, 1831. Emigrated to Canada in the Spring of 1856, the voyage taking six weeks. For nearly fifty years he was a farmer in the vicinity of Brighton and Trenton. He was twice married and leaves to mourn the loss five sons and six daughters. In religion he was a Presbyterian and always a regular attendant at the church services, setting a Godly example to all with whom he came in contact. A loving and devoted father has gone from us, but only to a "Better Country." His last twelve years were spent in Toronto and everything was done to make him as comfortable as possible in his declining days. The funeral service was conducted by Dr. Harvey Jellio of "Cooke's Church," assisted by Rev. Mr. McNichol of Toronto Bible Training School, and Rev. J. McP. Scott, of St. John's Presbyterian, Church. After which his remains were placed in a crypt of the Forest Lawn Mausoleum. The surviving members of the family are: John B., Fred, and Rev. Jas L. of Clayburn, B. C., William of Lethbridge, Christina and Mrs. Thos. J Humphries of Calgary, Chas, A., Mary, and Helen of Toronto, Mrs. D. F. Bradd of Brighton, and Mrs. Alex.
