Their descendants George Deans-Buchan, Elizabeth Gordon and John MacKenzie still own these cottages built by William Atkinson, who incidentally also built in 1884 Holy Angles Roman Catholic Church." from page 94 of "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne.16

Two passengers were aboard: Al's nephew, Roy, of Kent, Ohio and his bride, the former Sara Dustin Jones, of Cleveland, Ohio. Al had made arrangements for the honeymooners to have the cottage next door to his. It was the property of Walter MacGregor, who lived near Castleton. Walter was an uncle of Al's daughter, Margaret. Like Roy, Sara loved Presqu'ile and, following the birth of Elizabeth Anne Donaghy on June 18,1917, she wanted to locate a cottage site. They settled on purchasing three lots from Frank Cornwall, and Bill Atkinson was hired as contractor. The original cottage was remodeled and refurnished in 1938-39. In September of 1940 the cottage burned to the ground." from page 94 & 95 of "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose and Bonnie Browne.16

  • Note: circa 1930; Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Atkinson Store; Mr. Benjamin started baking bread and making treats in the old lighthouse keeper's house owned by Del Smith. Mr. Benjamin would make deliveries in his English car with the steering wheel on the right hand side. Many used to go to his cottage to get fresh bread, and yachts would stop at the Hotel looking for fresh bread. He hired a young lad during the summer, using a two wheeled wagon to deliver baked goods to the cottages. Eventually Mr. Benjamin decided to expand. In the 1930's Mr. William Atkinson built a store east of the Hotel. This store was called Bayview Bakery, and it was built to be a tea room and bake shop for Mr. Benjamin. He continued his local delivery to the cottages but this venture was not a success and the building was left empty for several years." from page 78 of "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose & Bonnie Browne.16

This census record has them a few lines down from Maurice Cheer who was at 115 Main St. HUH?? Also, Fred Atkinson married Josephine Gallagher in 1926. Why is he shown as single??? • Residence: March 1933; 7 Prince Edward St., Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "(1933) March - At six forty-five on Saturday morning the sleep of the occupants of the Clarendon Hotel was rudely woken when a large Metropolitan Transport truck and trailer charged into the front of Ed. A. Simmons drug store. Skidding on the pavement the driver was unable to make the right hand turn and the transport hit the centre window of the store an caved it in before coming to a stop. What prevented it from going on through the building and out the back remains a mystery. The transport, it is said, had a ten ton load and when matter weighing that much gets in motion, there is no telling where it will stop. It is thought that the step of about eight inches at the store entrance proved too much for the monster and saved the interior of the store from demolition. The damage to the store front will amount to a considerable sum. Three plate glass windows and a plate glass door were smashed to smithereens. The frame work of the front was knocked out of place and badly wrecked. Goods in the windows and goods and fixtures in the store back of the push were badly damaged also. Mr. William Atkinson was called in and effected temporary repairs to the store front. It is just one year, almost to the day, since the north window of the store was broken by a couple of boys at play. • Note: circa 1946; Bayview Store, Presqu'ile Point, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Mayme Atkinson had a gas pump so she sold both gas and coal oil. Coal oil was used for cooking in the boats and cottages at this time. The coal oil drum was in the shed behind the store and it cost 19 cents an Imperial gallon. One had to be very careful when filling American cans because they were smaller and sometimes you had ONE BIG MESS! The store also sold wieners and baloney at 39 cents a pound. Mayme provided provisions for the campers and yachtsmen, sold stamps and took campers' news for The Squ'iler. It was a busy little place, so, when William Atkinson had to have one leg amputated in later years, it seemed the natural place for him to 'hold court'. He sat to the left of the door where he would be out of the way, yet as accessible as possible. Everyone knew him and he greeted the campers as they entered the store. He sat, looking quite comfortable, in a large rocking chair. Many friends and customers would draw up a chair nearby and they would have a lengthy chat." from page 78 of "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose & Bonnie Browne.12

Many friends and customers would draw up a chair nearby and they would have a lengthy chat." from page 78 of "Presqu'ile" by Susan Brose & Bonnie Browne.8

"WILLIAM H. HELMAN; (Article 1) Mr. Hellman was born in the City of Bristol, England in 1858 and with his brother, Mr. C. Helman, came to Canada when quite a lad 27 years ago. He first settled in Brighton and was married in 1881 to Miss Mary Lawlor, who with an only daughter, Mabel, survive him. For five years he resided in Newtonville, returning to Brighton in 1886. For many years he was in fellowship with the Methodist Church and was an Ex-president of the Epworth league of Christian Endeavor. He was an enthusiastic member of the Canadian Older of Oddfellows, having filled many of its most important offices, having joined the order in Oct. 1888, being a charter member of Presque Isle Lodge. For some five or six years he had been ailing in health, and for this time had been fighting the dreadful disease, consumption, which was gradually robbing him of strength and life. He passed quietly away on February, 11th, 1897. His funeral was very largely attended on Sabbath last, the town band, of which he had been a member, accompanying the procession, and the Oddfellows conducting the funeral service at the grave. The religious Service was held in the Methodist Church conducted by his pastor Rev. Mr. Watch.
(Article 2) The funeral of Mr. W. H. Helman was held on Sunday, Feb. 14th, under the auspices of the Canadian Order of OddFellows. The brethren from Trenton, Colborne and Codrington attended in large numbers. Mr. Helman was one of the most active members of the order, beloved and respected by all. The band, of which Mr. Helman was a member for many years, turned out and the combination made one of the most imposing processions ever seen in the village. Mr. Lewis of Trenton marshalled the brethren in an easy and impressive manner. The service was held in the Methodist Church which was crowded to its utmost capacity thus indicating the regard for the deceased not only by his brethren but the whole community. The Rev. C. W. Watch preached an effective sermon to the living and, spoke in eulogistic terms of the departed. At the grave, the solemn services of the church and the order were read. The brethren who took part at the grave were J. Dyer, D. D. G. M., A. P. German N. G., and C. A. Lapp, P. N. G. On returning to the Lodge room, resolutions were passed thanking the pastor, choir and members of the band for their kindness." from pg. 004 of Newspaper Clippings, a collection donate by Shawnee Spencer to the Brighton Digital Archives, 2022.
