  • Note: circa 1922; Ameliasburgh Twp., Carrying Place, Prince Edward Co., Ontario; "William David Hanthorn of the Carrying Place; Wm. D. Hanthorn of the Carrying Place; Born in 1904 on a farm 6 'A miles north of Coe Hill, in Hastings County, one of nine children, Bill describes the Hanthorn family as "poor but happy". The potato blight in the 1840's in Ireland, with its subsequent famine, drove many Irishmen to North America. The Hanthorns were among these. Two young brothers, John and James, settled at Rice Lake. John, great grandfather of Bill, was a skilled carpenter and had brought with him his chest of tools to do fine carpentry. His son, Robert, learned the trade too, but there was little demand for fine carpentry in the wilderness, so he built barns and houses. Robert's wife, Bill's grandmother, was Amanda McNutt of Dutch ancestry. Bill's father was Joe Hanthorn, son of the above. Joe left Rice Lake and went to Coe Hill to apprentice with his older brother, Will, who was a blacksmith. While there he met his future wife, Florence Leveridge, whose family lived in the vicinity. Bill's Grandfather and Grandmother Leveridge had come from England. They had a farm of 100 acres, called Tark Farm' after the home they had left in England, and located along the survey for the railroad to Bancroft. Grandfather Leveridge worked by day in the mines and on the railroad. Along with his sons, they cleared the trees and stones from a large section of his acreage. Bill recalls stone piles and stone fences everywhere, with plots of grain and hay, and space for a large vegetable garden. Picking potato bugs was a job for the grandchildren.
When Joe Hanthorn and Florence Leveridge married, they made their home at 'Maple Farm' north of Coe Hill and near the Leveridge farm. Using his oxen, 'Buck' and 'Bright, Joe was able to clear only about 10 acres of their 100-acre farm. It became impossible to support the family on such a meagre holding, so they moved to Coe Hill, and Joe resumed blacksmithing. Young Bill helped in the shop, blowing the bellows and holding the lantern for his father to see. When Bill was 10 his father embarked on a bad business venture. He had a contract to carry the mail and run a transportation service twice a day from Brinklow to Coe Hill. To replace his canvas-covered stage coach with a Model T, he mortgaged his home and shop. Rural conditions of the north and corduroy roads were not suitable, even for a Model T. The house and the blacksmith shop went first, and the family returned to the farm in the woods in 1916.
When Bill passed his Entrance Examinations, poverty was knocking, so it was necessary for him to help support the large family. Ever since, a major regret has been his lack of further education. He was an avid reader from an early age, and whenever possible he read Dickens, Horatio Alger and papers sent from his mother's English relatives. When about 10, he had read the Bible from cover to cover. He could produce poetry with ease! Once at school, when he and a friend had been strapped for being late, they later sang some of Bill's poetry out-of-doors and loud enough so that the teacher could hear them: "Oh, Lord of Love, Look down from above, And pity us poor scholars. They have hired a fool, To teach the school, And they paid him 600 dollars." Another strapping followed. Bill's Aunt Lilian Leveridge, whose poetry introduces the Carrying Place section of this book, may not have been amused, either.
The year Bill was 17, in 1921, his father and mother moved to the Carrying Place, partly in order to educate the family. Already his Leveridge grandparents were there, living with his Aunt Gert Clark and his Aunt Lilian Leveridge. His Grandmother Hanthorn came too, and died shortly after arrival at age 90.
The first task was to convert the barn behind the house in Ameliasburgh Township into a blacksmith shop for his father to ply his trade. One of Bill's first jobs in the Carrying Place was janitor of St. John's Anglican Church. For 50His Aunt Gert, who operated a private lending library in Trenton, and for whom Angus Mowat worked, supplied books for Bill to read and egged him on toward self-improvement. Another source of his reading materials was the home of Charles and Alfreda Westfall, who kept the store and post-office. Bill was invited to dinner frequently; each one would sit quietly reading books, then a discussion of the books followed during the meal.
In the 1920's it was very hard to find work, so Bill took a course in motor mechanics. His father offered to divide his blacksmith shop, which had been established in Murray, and Bill opened up his 'Car Repairs' in one half. One year a gas pump was added to their business when a detour, by-passing Hwy. 2 between Brighton and Trenton, re-routed cars past their location. The Hanthorn Garage was born. Business expanded and presently they have a modem garage, a car agency and a fleet of school buses that are seen regularly on Ameliasburgh roads.
Bill married Edith Montgomery of Colborne in 1935. They have a family of four, and all have attended college. Of late, with spare time at their disposal, Bill has penned many a story and rhyme, laced with humour, and products of a fantastic memory of nearly 80 years.

As a school bus driver, I was there twice a day for many years, but did not stay to study. It was in 1950 that my wife Edith and I both started into the school busing business. I was patching the roof on our little storage shed when a delegation of parents came to discuss school busing into Trenton High School. I agreed with them that it would be a good thing. I didn’t get down off the roof. Just as a joke I said, "Why don’t you ask Edith?” Since she was busily engaged with the new lunch room I had built for her on the front of our house, I didn’t think she would do it. They came back and said she would if I would buy her a suitable vehicle. A 1946 three-seater Ford station wagon was purchased, and we were in the bus business. Before we had been in operation more than a week, another group of parents from the Smokes Point Road and Gardenville also requested busing to Trenton High School. So a 1937 Pontiac three-seater was procured for me to drive. It was old and the wooden body was weather-beaten, but it was very dependable. Apparently our service must have been dependable, for we were next approached to provide service to B.C.L In 1951 a contract was signed with the Bay of Quinte High School Board, and an antiquated city bus was purchased from Grant Rathbun. This bus served its purpose but caused a lot of problems." from page 385 of "7th Town Ameliasburgh", by William David Hanthorn.10

I started driving regularly on the #3 route to B.C.I. when I developed an allergy to the soap necessary to clean my hands in the garage. My fingers split open till the blood ran out To me it was a real pleasure to drive through the beautiful scenery between Carrying Place and Belleville. It seemed like a picnic to get away from the strain of garage problems. I drove bus until 1971 when I had a partial stroke.
