… Ed Burtt, vice-president of operations, will use sonar and imaging equipment to pinpoint 400 sunken ships in Havana's harbour another 100 merchant vessels along the northwest coast and an undetermined number of ships that sank near around the Isle of Youth off the southern shore of the island. Over the next five years, the company will identify and target six of the most financially and historically significant galleons for recovery. The agreement could be renewed for another three years, Lewis said. Burtt Is optimistic the six galleons will yield something impressive given Cuba's crucial role in the Spanish silver route as the primary layover for all treasure-laden galleons enroute to Spain. "We'll be the first people in this area to uncover 500 years of history." he said. "Nations fell because of these ships and the sliver route - the Spanish changed the world forever when they decimated the Inca, Maya and Aztecs to quench their thirst for precious metals and jewels."
