  • Note: 1990; The Cottage, Benoir Lake, Ontario; "In 1990, we made our most cherished possession, our cottage on Benoir Lake, just south of Algonquin Park. Howard and Bernice Sheppard, our nearest and dearest friends had purchased a lot and built a cottage a few years prior to our purchase. We spent many enjoyable weekends with them. Across the road from their cottage was an unoccupied brick bungalow. The owner’s husband was building it for their retirement. He dropped dead while working at it. His wife was shocked and devastated; she never returned for 10 - 15 years. Howard suggested we should buy it as an investment. Joan’s brother and another builder examined the house and said it was extremely well built and structurally sound. Thus the owner was contacted by phone - we made an offer - she accepted and we began a new adventure. The interior was never started - Joan’s brother, Wayne, did a wonderful job converting what seemed to be impossible into a very comfortable second home. It was completely engulfed by trees and shrubs - the interior had been used by the daughter for interesting weekends and left a complete mess. It took the Sheppards and us several days to clear the lot and clean up the interior. We now have a cozy, comfortable retreat. Believe the author when he says it was a godsend for him. By 1990, his busy life was taking a toll on his health - he suffered from burn-out which left him physically and mentally exhausted. Medical attention did wonders but the cottage became a haven - an escape from the “rat race” - his health improved, he completed his teaching career and his political career with the aid of these two tonics." per Pettingill and Relatives Heritage by William M.
