    “The Demise of John Brown; Although not unexpected, yet the residents of this place heaved a deep sigh of regret and profound sorrow when the following funeral notices were to be found in the business places of this village.
    Died – In the village of Brighton, on Sunday, April 11th, 1920, John Brown, in the 44th year of his age. Funeral services will be held at this late residence, Centre Street, on Tuesday, 13th inst., at 2:30 pm. Interment at Wood’s Cemetery. It is not frequent we record the death of one so universally mourned, respected and loved by every citizen who have had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. Whether in business dealings or personal friendship, he seemed to work his way into the affections of all with whom he came in contact. The deceased was born of Scotch parentage in the city of London, England, in the year 1876, but with his people moved to the town of Dunlop, Scotland, when he was about 5 years of age. He was married to Catharine Clement of the same place in 1904, and at his demise left to mourn his loss, besides his widow, four sons and one daughter. In the year 1905 he came to Canada and settled in this village where he was extensively engaged in the exportation of fruit, dealing with such noted firms as Simons, Jacobs & Co., Glasgow; Garcia, Jacobs & Co., London, Eng.; Omer, Decuges & Sons, Paris, France and other similar places of business. His motto was “Play the Game Fair”, from which he was not known to depart, hence the unbounded confidence placed in him by business men on the two sides of the Atlantic, and his great success as a business man. He was taken seriously ill while on a visit to his native land in the month of March, 1910, and immediately on returning home submitted to a critical operation but his disease was of such a nature as would not yield to the most skillful treatment. Death is the law of life. We cannot, by any means evade or resist, so he passed peacefully away in the above named date. He has gone to be with the Good Master in whom he believed, and whom he served. In religion he was a member in the Presbyterian, in which he was much interested and supported liberally. The funeral services were held at his late home, conducted by his pastor, The Rev. A. K. McLeod, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Pickford, Anglican; Rev. Mr. Archer, Methodist; and the Rev. Mr. Howard, retired; in the presence of a large gathering of friends and acquaintances. The town flag floating at half mast in his honor. Among those who came from a distance were: - W. A. Coates, Director of Robert Reford Co., Montreal; D. O. Wood, Traffic Manager Canadian Government Merchant Marine; Richard Clancy, Ontario Representative Canadian Pacific Ocean Service; Mr. Bradford, C.P.R. Agent, Toronto; Leo Peppall, Foreign Freight Traffic Manager, G.T.R., Toronto; P. J. Carey, Dominion Fruit Inspector, Toronto; D. L. Dick, Simons Fruit Co., Toronto. There were also cablegrams and telegrams of condolence from Simons, Jacob Co., Glasgow; Glover Purley, Birmingham, England; C. R. W. Proctor, Manager of the Standard Bank, Edmonton; Henry Ross, N.B.; C. W. Baxter, Dominion Fruit Commission, Ottawa. All of which bespeaks the high esteem in which departed was held. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.” We assure Mrs. Brown and her family of the sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow.” This was transcribed Jan 17 2016 from a display given to me by Mary Macklam for the HOH 2016 Saturday Open House.6

  • Immigration*: September 1905; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "John Brown; Mary Macklam; John Brown made regular trips to Canada as an agent for Simon Shuttleworth, trading in butter and cheese. Later he was involved in exporting apples to Edinburgh, Glasgow and South Africa. As a canny business man, he was able to see the opportunities available in the Brighton area. He therefore brought his wife and six-week-old son, John, from Dunlop, Scotland. Before long, he owned three farms, the Dracup place, the farm across from the Union School where John Jr. and his wife Muriel lived later, and also adjacent to Woods' Cemetery. He hired a man to run each farm. The building north of John's house was a bake house. The family was related to William (Tiger) Dunlop of the Canada Company, which settled the area around Galt, now part of Cambridge, Ontario." from page 31 & 32 of "Brighton Township" by Florence Chatten, 2009
    Note: John, Jr. shown born Apr 1905 in Scotland and was six weeks old when they came to Canada; suggesting immigration was in early May 1905.
    Note: Mary Macklam says John Jr. was 6 months old at the time of immigration to Brighton area, which would make their arrival in September 1905.8

  • Note: 23 December 1912; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Mr. Brown Honored; Last Monday forenoon the employees of Mr. John Brown effected an unique and fitting surprise to him. When he visited the fruit house, one of the number informed him that they desired to have him present at eleven o'clock. Mr. Brown was baffled in interpretting the motive of this request, but after attending to some business at the station he returned at the appointed hour and on entering the packing room was puzzled on seeing all the hands lined up. Hearing so much about strikes of late, his first thought was that one had suddenly developed. However, he met with disappointment in that respect, as one of the number read the following address in the course of which he was presented with a luxurious rocker, one that fairly speaks out its comfort.;
    Brighton, Dec. 23, 1912; Dr. Mr. Brown: - We, a number of your employees, wish to express our sincere gratitude toward you, having always found you a just and upright man to work for, one who extends the most reasonable consideration in all matters. For this reason we have met to ask you to accept this chair, not for its intrinsic value, but as a slight token of our esteem for you. May it afford you much comfort as you rest after the strenuous day of labor you are constantly called upon to perform; and as you enjoy its ease your mind may be at ease in that your employees are likewise at ease in mind in that you have been well satisfied with their best endeavors. Hoping you may live to enjoy many prosperous years, and wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.; Signed by your employees; Over Twenty employees signed the above address.; Mr. Brown expressed his pleasure in suitable words, and in a brief review of this year's apple business to date, particularly in regard to the market remuneration, spoke very optimistically of the future. Pronounced expression of his appreciation of his employees service was given, and kindly interest in their welfare manifested." transcribed Jan 17 2016 from a display made by Mary Macklam who is a granddaughter of John Brown, Sr. - bound for the displays of HOH 2016.
