"Death of Geo. Gerow - The sudden death of Mr. George Gerow, early yesterday morning, Jan 17, 1906, caused great surprise and sorrow here and also throughout the district. He was in the his fortieth year, of robust constitution and always enjoyed good health, but a cold last week seemed to undermine his strength and early Sunday morning had developed into pneumonia, to a degree causing medical attention. He sank rapidly, however, and passed peacefully away early Wednesday morning. He was a member of one of the oldest and largest families in the county, that of Mr. John Gerow. His life was one of industry and exemplary habits and won for him the goodwill and respect of his large circle of friends. ... Deceased was past master of the Percy Masonic Lodge, by the members of which, joined by those of Colborne Lodge, the funeral will be conducted this Thursday afternoon, leaving the home at 1:30 for Salem Church were service will be held. After which interment takes place in Salem cemetery." from Carol Brown's book of news articles, copied at The Cobourg Public Library, Oct. 2001
"On Monday of last week Mrs. A. A. Murphy of this place, received word that her brother, Geo. Gerow, of Colborne was dangerously ill. He had been at his usual work the Saturday before. Two days later she received notice of his death from pneumonia. He was about 39 years of age and his first wife, formerly Miss Mina Drinkwalter of this place, died about three years ago leaving two children both of whom are living. After a time he married Miss Thorne, daughter of Geo. Thorne of Warkworth, who survives him with no issue. Mr. Gerow was a member of a somewhat remarkable family, that of Mr. John Gerow of Percy, formerly, now of Castleton., which mumbered fifteen children, all of whom lived to grown up and to be married. Although at the present time only ten of them are living, five of them live in the township of Cramahe and the rest in Manitoba. His mother died in 1870. Deceased was an active member of the militia and to qualify himself for that purpose he attended the military college in Quebec city where he received a first class diploma. He used to meet his company in Kingston every year to tune for their annual drill,he being Lieutenant at the time of his death. He was also a prominent member of the Masonic body. The funeral service was held on the 19th inst., in the Salem church, conducted by the Rev. S. T. Bartlett of Colborne, assited by the Rev. S. G. Rorke, of Salem, which was largely attended, when the relatives alone half filled the church. After the sermon the burial service of the Methodist church was read in the church and then his remains were interred in the Salem cemetery by his brother Masons under their beautiful ritual service. Mr. C. Wensley, of Campbellford, officiated for the Masons at the burial." from Carol Brown's book of news articles, copied at The Cobourg Public Library, Oct. 2001
