- Death*: 13 January 2013; Kingston General Hospital, Kingston, Frontenac Co., Ontario; Atkins, Harold Newbon (B. April 18, 1930, D. Jan 13, 2013) Harold died peacefully in Kingston General Hospital surrounded by his wife and children, due to complications from a fall at age 82. Harold was born on the last working farm on Presqu'ile Point, then mainly a summer resort community. His parents were John T. N. (Jack) and Frances Mary Atkins (Eagleson). He will be missed by Anne, his living wife since 1960, his son (John) David (Cheryl Stoltz), grandsons Alexander (Sandy) and Iain, his daughter Julia Anne (Jeff Hannaford), brothers Bob (Lois) and Don (Edna Mae), sister Peggy (Hugh Hawthorne) and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A Civil engineer, Harold graduated from University of Toronto in 1954, and earned a Masters of Science degree from Queen's University in 1963. His work experience included the planning of the Mid-Canada Radar Defense Line and design, construction and maintenance of airport runways for the Ministry of Transport. In 1967, Harold joined Ontario's newly opened community college system as a teacher and course coordinator with Seneca College in North York. In his element as an educator, Harold completed a satisfying twenty-seven year career at Seneca as Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engerineering Technology, responsible for 5 engineering divisions and more than 2000 students. His succecssful textbook, Highway Materials, Soils and Concrete, was published in four editions and is still used in Canada and elsewhere in the world. In 1998 Harold and his wife moved to their cottage on Presqu'ile and then built a home in Brighton. Harold wrote many articles for various publications about the history of Presqu'ile, including the chapter "Presqu'ile" in That's Just the Way We Were: Brighton Memories. He was instrumental in the creation of displays at the Lighthouse Centre, including a mannequin representing his father who narrates the history of Presqu'ile. A private family funeral will be held, and he will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery in Brighton. Harold will be honoured at a public farewell and remembrance on his beloved Presqu'ile point next summer. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Friends of Presqu'ile or to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated." www.walasbrighton@rushnellfamilyservices.com1

Note: His dentist was Dr. Edward Alexander Sanford who practiced and lived in Manhattan and then New Rochelle. His father, John Edward Sanford, was born in Brighton but moved to Rochester as a young man and was a dentist there his full life. A brother was also a dentist. - Note: circa 1900; New York, New York, U.S.A.; "The key info is that the dentist who encouraged his patient, John Atkins, re the value of Presqu'ile Point as a summer holiday destination was Edward Alexander Sanford. He was born in Rochester, but his father, John Edward Sanford, also a dentist, was born in Brighton. A brother of John Edward, Frederick Herman Sanford, was also a dentist in Rochester. Looks like Edward took on the family business and did well as a result. The connection between dentist and patient may have happened when they both lived in New York City or Manhattan, or maybe when they are in New Rochelle, a more upscale burb. Certainly, Edward Sanford was in New Rochelle from about 1905 and died there in 1918. John Atkins was shown to be there at a point in time, moving on to Greenwich, Connecticut, becoming a salesman and then manager for a paper manufacturing company." from an email sent to Susan Brose by Dan Buchanan, Apr 29 2024, in response to a request re the specific dentist who recommended Presqu'ile to Mr. Atkins.

He also probably preferred a location under the British crown. He had a dentist, Dr. Sandford, who came from Brighton, Ontario. Dr. Sandford had a camp at Presqu'ile, and spent his vacations there. The dentist's accounts of Presqu'ile
interested Mr. Atkins, and in 1900 or 1901, he brought his family for a summer holiday there. The trip from New York included trains to Rochester, and a steamer across Lake Ontario to Gosport and then a horse and buggy or boat ride to Presqu'ile. According to a newspaper account from 1901, Mrs Atkins returned to Rochester on the steamer "Alexandra", with her family and maid, Miss Delaney.
