  "A Sad Accident.—We are informed that a man named Joseph Stewart, who lived near cedar creek, in Brighton, met with an accident on Wednesday last, which caused his death. It appears that he was engaged in cutting out some timbers from the bottom of an old mill frame, to use for wood, when the entire structure fell on him, burying him in the ruins, and injuring him so fatally that he died within three hours afterwards.   Note: Joseph Stuart and his wife Delilah Edmonds had five children and he was 55 years old at the time of the accident. The surname spelling of Stewart is used here although Joseph used Stuart consistently. The spelling comes from his son, Henry, who settled in Seymour and persistently used Stewart. Cedar Creek is not a place, per se, but refers to the small creek that runs north into Breakaway Creek in the valley north of Hilton. The term "cutting out some timbers from the bottom of an old mill frame" could refer to a mill near what we know of as the Cedard Creek Cheese Factory, on the east side of Number 30 Highway, between Hilton village and the valley. The remains of Lewis Shearer's saw mill may have been in there on the creek as late as 1877, or it may have been any number of mills built in the early period of saw mills in the 1840s and 1850s. Documents show that Joseph Stuart lived somewhere between Orland and Hilton, or maybe for a time near Codrington, as his kids grew up. (Dan Buchanan, July 30 2021)^9,10
