On September 1st, 1805, a boy was born near Bath, Somerset England. Born of Christian parents, young James Macklin had every advantage which their means would allow. The young lad grew up with his brothers and sisters enjoying to the full his childhood days. James was a quiet studious boy. He acquired a liberal education which was to stand him in good stead in later years. A college education his parents could not afford for their children, but James succeeded in accumulating a wealth of knowledge not altogether found in books. Shortly after he left school the family moved to Tiverton in beautiful Devonshire. There, James engaged in lace making for a livelihood. He was an ardent lover of nature - fields, woods and flowers. He absorbed that indefinite 'something' which when it comes to any life enriches it and makes it strong. This with the artistic delicacy of his work added charm to this young manhood. James met an attractive young woman endowed with gifts and qualifications which fitted her for a homemaker in any sphere of life. It was only natural that such a young man should woo this charming girl. Life was full of romance, why should they not marry? Their English hearts dreamed of any ivy-clad cottage with roses at the door and a garden wondrous fair. Dream will not build homes, but they decided to make a venture and James took a happy bride to a humble cottage. Children came to bless the home, lace making did not provide the necessities of life for a growing family. They must plan to supplement their income. James had a hobby, he made beautiful furniture - an immense value for the home but not too remunerative in spare times. An artist admired Edwin, a fair child of four years with curly golden hair, and painted his portrait. James watched the artist fascinated, then said "I can do that!" Fired with ambition the later talent was awakened. He could paint, and he did, having more than average ability. Portrait painting was specialty and so absorbed would he become in a study he was known to work all night. This was a delight, but something more lucrative must be chosen.
James Macklin and his wife had heard of opportunities and possibilities - of the vastness of lands and forests beyond the seas. Yes, they would seek adventure and wealth. What if they had to face hardships, their children were growing into sturdy capable people. The young delight in mystery and those intrepid would be pioneers banished all thoughts of fear and chafed at delay in the exciting undertaking. For the parents to sever life's friendships and leave beautiful Devon took courage, they faced the future with bravery born of necessity. Having packed, with their family of five boys and two girls, the Macklin's sailed from Plymouth in the spring of 1840 taking six weeks in crossing the ocean. It was an exciting passage with storms and high waves that threatened to swamp the small craft. little Edwin fell down a hatchway but was not seriously injured. All reached Canada in good spirits. Excitement of the children knew no bounds. The sail up the placid St Lawrence gave assurance to the parents who were filled with gratitude and marvelled at the majestic river and the wonders of this world. Cobourg, when they arrived, treated them with every consideration. Cobourg was a growing town with a small population but business was well established. There was a land agency and to this they went first. They wanted a location for a home where the children might have the best possible advantages. They bought a farm in which was the only clearing, near a mission of Indians in the vicinity of Rice Lake (?Lot 14 9th Conc Haldimand??) (just south of village of Roseneath) (In Roseneath) There was a church and a good industrial school which the Macklin children attended. Now began the trek with food and household effects by oxcart over corduroy roads through t... " per GEDCOM of Nick Vanderknokke, April 29 2015.4

  • Note*: 9 June 1859; Court House and Gaol, Cobourg, Northumberland Co., Ontario; Neil Butters of Cobourg has told me that James Macklin was an official in Cobourg at the time of Dr. King's hanging and was responsible for inspecting the gallows before the hanging. In this context, he obtained a piece of the hanging rope which was cut into small pieces by members of the Lawson family and the pieces sold as souvenirs. The piece of the rope Neil has is a small sprig of rope material which was handed down through the generations. Neil's aunt Muriel married Thomas Edward Bruce Macklin in 1930 and it is through this line of the Macklin family that the rope passed down, from Thomas' father William Arthur Edward Macklin, his father William Macklin and his father, the original source, James Macklin. A daughter of Thomas Macklin and Muriel Butters, Lorna, married Jack Dorland and they were the parents of David, Diane and Bill of Brighton Township. Bill Dorland told me some time ago that there was a piece of the rope in the family somewhere and now I can see where. (Dan Buchanan, July 2015)5
