- Note: 21 April 1852; Conc 5 Lot 5 & 6, Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. Lewis Shearer's saw mill in the valley north of Hilton was destroyed, killing Mr. Shearer and a helper, Jacob Herrington. This event is known in local parlance as "The Breakaway". The Stephens brothers, Alva and Daniel, had recently obtained parts of the south half of lot 5 from their father Richard, so, all of a sudden, their lake was gone. They sold to John Philp soon after. Note: Concession number is weird, may be a 9 and it is in a group of 9's, so putting it that way. There is no mention of W. H., Stephens in land records for Conc 9, Lot 5, or Conc 5, Lot 5, so must have been renting or leaseing. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)8,10 - Note*: 1 January 1852; Brighton Twp., Northumberland Co., Canada West; Brighton Township was created January 1, 1852, from the east side of Cramahe and the west side of Murray. The border between the newly sized Cramahe and the new Brighton townships was the lot line between lots 10 and 11. (Dan Buchanan, July 14 2021)

Note: Pages are out of order. Have to go back to page 25 of 160 for the kids at the top. (Dan Buchanan, July 15 2021)6 - Note: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Brighton Twp., Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21, 1852, several days of heavy rain along with spring snowmelt caused a gravel bank to give way on the small lake north-west of Hilton. The water cascaded down the narrrow valley, following the creek to the north-east, all the way to Cole Creek and eventually the Trent River. William Henry Stephens was also here with a growing family, but does not appear to have obtained land yet. He would leave very soon (1853) after the disaster and settled in Kent County.
