This person, whom you list as Henry D. Massey, is actually Henry Lycurgus Massey, born 6 Aug 1809 in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY, died 11 Apr 1872, probably Wisc. He married Fanny (Uren) Ennor on 9 Nov 1865 in Grant Co, WI. He previously operated a leather and saddle shop in Galena, Jo Daviess Co,IL. It was in front of this shop on 13 Feb 1836 that he shot and mortally wounded John B. Smith, the killer of Henry's older brother, Woodbury. The date you have for Woodbury's death is correct. Smith and his son ambushed Woodbury at the site of Woodbury's lead mine in Dubuque, IA, across the Mississippi river from Galena. Later, Woodbury's 17 year old sister, Louisa Maria, shot and seriously wounded Smith's son in a store in Dubuque. The whole series of events helped a lot in clearing up the lawlessness that existed in Iowa, which was indian country at that time. Common belief is that Louisa County, IA, is named after Louisa Massey.
