- Note*: circa 1930; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Cheer Family, the Old Opera House and Their Part in Brighton History By Rose Ellery: Samuel Charles Cheer was born in Brighton in 1863, married Alice Maddox Towersey and toured the vaudeville circuit of New York State and Ontario for many years, then decided to settle in Brighton to raise a family. Their three children were born here and during this period, Samuel and Alice both performed regularly at the "Old Opera House" on the second floor of Brighton's Town Hall. The hall was built in 1885 and demolished by a tornado on July 13th, 1973. Their daughter Ruby (1904) performed in these plays right from when she was a young girl. Maurice Cheer (1891) also performed and got the nickname "Rube" from one of the characters he portrayed. Mr. Cheer also directed many of the plays performed at this time and Alice, a gifted singer, was also pianist for other acts and performances at the Opera House. Sam Cheer was bailiff and mail courier in the '20s and '30s. Their son Ralph (1893) was nicknamed Dan from a performance. As a young man, he operated an ice cream parlour in the Proctor Block, on the easterly north side of Main Street. This is now the brick wall just west of the restored facade of the old Standard and CIBC bank, and is part of the Sobeys parking lot. This block, after many renovations over the years, was destroyed by fire in 1980. Ralph was also employed by Grant Quick at Presqu'ile Pavilion in the 1920s and again in the late 1940s. During this period he also owned a farm east of the present public school at Spring Valley on County Road 26. The family lived there until they "moved to town" in 1948. Their farm was purchased by Peter and Jessie Kulaska, newly arrived from Europe and is now owned by Peter and Jessie's one daughter, Lucille and son-in-law, Tom Coyne, who are chicken producers. Maurice Cheer, an electrician by trade, worked locally; he rewired the Cooey plant at one time and was employed at General Motors as an electrical maintenance man. He later worked at the Trenton Air Base in the same capacity until his retirement. He then did the odd wiring job for individuals for a few years. Maurice loved horse racing and had attended every Queen's Plate running for as long as his health would allow. Many a horse calendar adorned the walls of his home. He never owned a horse, just enjoyed them." "That's Just The Way We Were, Brighton Memories", pg. 256 & 25712

Flindall and the late Mrs. Flindall, became the bride of Norman Maurice Cheer, Brighton. Rev. A.N. Reid was the officiating clergyman. Miss Pearl Cole, the bridesmaid, wore a suit of mystic blue gabardine with black accessories and corsage of Sweetheart roses. Mr. Thomas Cheer of Brighton was his brother's groomsman. Mrs. A.N. Reid played the wedding march. A reception and dinner followed the ceremony, the three-tier wedding cake and white gladioli decorating the table. The groom's mother wore a dress of sentimental blue, with black accessories and corsage of Sweetheart roses. For their wedding trip to western and northern Ontario the bride added a neck piece of Russian squirrels, the gift of the groom, to her costume. The bride's gift to the groom was a Gladstone bag; to the bridesmaid an initialled gold compact, and to the pianist a cup and saucer and corsage of roses. - Marriage*: 11 September 1948; The White House, Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "WEDDINGS; Cheer-Flindall; Rene's White House in Brighton was the setting for a pretty early fall wedding on Saturday, September 11, 1948, at three o'clock in the afternoon, when Sarah Laurine Flindall of Brighton, daughter of Mr. Harry L. Flindall and the late Mrs. Flindall, became the bride of Norman Maurice Cheer, Brighton. Rev. A.N. Reid was the officiating clergyman. The house was beautifully decorated with multicoloured gladioli and the ceremony performed before a flower banked bay window. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attired in a gabardine suit of neutral shade, with Burgundy accessories and corsage of red Better Times roses and bouvardia. The grooms gift to the groomsman was a leather billfold. Out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. John Alyea and daughter, Miss Rosemary Alyea of Trenton, and Miss Louise Cheer of Toronto, the groom's sister. Upon their return the coupe will take up residence in Brighton." a newspaper clipping in the scrap book of Marjorie Marshall, provided by Florence Chatten, Dec 2020.
