"Born in Brighton Township and raised on a farm at Carmen, on the 3rd Concession, as one of thirteen children, ... " per Obit of Earle William Chatten, sent to me via email, 2019 11 12.3,2,4 - Death*: 9 November 2019; Brighton, Northumberland Co., Ontario; "Earle William Chatten; It is with sadness that we announce that Earle Chatten died on Saturday, November 9th, 2019 in his 99th year, peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, as he wanted it. He was recognized as an inventive and talented fruit grower and craftsman, known for his creativity and hard work. Born in Brighton Township and raised on a farm at Carmen, on the 3rd Concession, as one of thirteen children, Earle was always an entrepreneur. For many years he and Liz owned and operated Pine Springs Farm Roadside Market, which they grew into a well-known local enterprise. Every fall people from miles around would come to admire Earle's weekly display of pumpkin and squash people while munching on the freshly made apple cider donuts. He thoroughly enjoyed exchanging new production ideas with his colleagues in the Northumberland and Durham Apple Growers' Association. A Pine Springs Farm booth was a fixture at the Applefest celebrations, from its inception for many years. In retirement Earle and Liz operated a small pick-your-own apples operation they called Apple Meadow. He was also active in his community. In the 1960s Earle was elected to Brighton Council then went on to serve on the local Planning Board. For many years he was on the Board of Stewards of Trinity St. Andrew's United Church, Brighton. Earle was an avid member of the Brighton Curling Club for much of his life and in his eighties joined the local Croquet League. He was a fierce bid euchre competitor that aimed to get a moonshot every time he played. As a craftsman, he loved woodworking and made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family and friends. He made a point of planting trees every year; apple, cedar, pine, whatever would beautify the landscape and replenish the supply of wood that someday someone else could use to build their homes. Every time you plant a tree, think of Earle, and plant trees often. In the winters he and Liz loved to travel to many places in Canada and across the Globe for holidays, but always brought back new ideas to improve their farming business. Earl will be remembered for his curiosity and sense of humour. It was a long and fruitful life, well-lived. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Thayer Raney, children Paul Chatten (Laurie), Sandra Hay, Jeff Chatten (Kathy); grandchildren Emily Chatten, Melanie Chatten, Laurence Hay, Fraser Hay, Lindsay Chatten (Derrick), and Jessica Chatten; and great-grandchild Jace Abbott; also two brothers Don and Neil Chatten and one sister, Marie Harnden. A Memorial Service will be held at the Trinity St. Andrew's United Church, Brighton on Saturday, November 16th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to service. There will be a reception following the service. Arrangements entrusted to the BRIGHTON FUNERAL HOME, 130 Main Street West, Brighton (613-475-2121). If desired, Memorial Donations to the Trinity St. Andrew's United Church would be appreciated by the family. On-line condolences at www.rushnellfamilyservices.com.
