  • Death*: 7 September 2009; Pincher Creek, Alberta; "Dr. Lorne Isaac Mitchell died peacefully on September 7, 2009 at home with his family. Born December 18, 1914 in Workworth, Ontario, the son of Robert and Ethel Mitchell and the youngest of three children - Lulu, Gordon and Lorne. He graduated from Queen's University in 1942, enlisted in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps and survived as a Captain during World War II in Calgary. It was here that he met and married Agnes Freebairn from Pincher Creek. Together they raised 8 children, 20 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren. Lorne practiced as a Urologist in Calgary for over 50 years. In 1954 he
returned to his love of raising Hereford cattle when he purchased the Flintrock Ranch near Pincher Creek. For many years Lorne lived a dual identity - doctor by week and rancher by week-ends and holidays, with many
miles driven between Calgary and Pincher. After retiring from the practice of medicine at 75 years of age, he concentrated on rebuilding antique tractors and farm equipment, and helping out at Heritage Acres. For the past 4 years Lorne and Agnes have been
residents of Vista Village in Pincher Creek. Lorne is survived by Agnes (Freebairn), his wife of 66 years, his children Rob (Maureen), John (Bonnie), Joan (Wulf) Gerhardt, Mary Freebairn, (Walter Pasieka) Gordon (Lola), Lorna (Darrell) MacLachlan, Philip (Elizabeth) and Carol Borrett. A Memorial Service will be held at Pincher Creek United Church on Saturday September 12, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. with reception following. Those wishing to
remember Lorne with a donation may want to consider Heritage Acres, Box 2496, Pincher Creek T0K 1W0 or a charity of choice.
