Born at Huff's Island, Prince Edward County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Adams. His family moved to Codrington when he was 3 years old. Here he attended school and lived until 1906. At Norham in March of 1905 he married Miss Estelle Buchanan. This year they quietly observed, owing to his illness, their golden wedding anniversary. Following his marriage he resided at Wooler for six years moving to Sidney Twp. in 1912, where he became one of the most prosperous farmers. Retiring in 1941, he went to reside in Colborne. He was a member of Colborne United Church. Since his residence there he made many friends. Although retired, he took a keen interest in his garden and flowers. Surviving are his wife, three daughters and one son: Miss Clara Adams, Toronto; Jean (Mrs. Douglas Anderson), St. John, New Brunswick; Annabel (Mrs. Norman Hardwick), Belleville; and Rex of London, Ontario. Also seven grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. Mr. Adams rested at G. B. Barnes Funeral Home, later at Colborne United Church, where a large number attended the funeral service on Wednesday, May 25 at 2:30 pm, conducted by the minister, Rev. M. Redvers Brown. Beautiful floral tributes surrounded the casket. The pall bearers were six nephews of the deceased, Messrs. Alta Smith, my friend from Campbellford who is principal of Brock St. is in bed with a split cartilage in her right leg. I think she went to the hospital yesterday, as there was no answer at the apartment. Her sister, Elsie, is her nurse. Joanne is having delays in her operation. The doctor and the psychiatrist are willing; now they need another doctor's signature. There has been so much controversy re abortions, that Joanne tells me there is much more red tape now. Well another week and you'll be wending your way west. Make a list of what you need from the apartment and if I can bring the items down I'll put them in the car. Trust Mark and Jim are well. Suppose Doug is back at work. I missed seeing Mrs. Anderson, Mark and Doug when they were here.
Be Seeing you soon, Until then, Love, Clara" letter to Jean Anderson from Clara Adams ?Mar 7 1966?, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Clara is Jean's sister, and remained unmarried. There is no date on this letter, so estimate around the same time as the other pre-party correspndence of family members. Clara uses the term "Folks" here, but I assume this was sent to Jean, as implied by the mentioned of her coming west soon, from New Brunswick to Stella's party March 27th. The Mrs. Anderson she refers to here may be Nellie Muriel (Werden) Anderson, Doug Anderson's mother. Assuming Clara was living in Belleville at this time?9

Had the cold weather get here before you left. Yes, I believe it did. It is now 7 degrees below zero and the drifts are about 12 inches or more. Norm has been sick the past three days with tremendous pain in the lower bowel. He called his old friend Dr. McVicker to come to him but he hasn't shown up yet. It was the one and only chance I might have had to get him fully examined. I coaxed him to get another doctor but once he began to feel better yesterday he refused. One seldom wins. He has taken off considerable weight and of course the poor old takes a great beating. We both realise we are so much better even our breathing. It's almost four weeks ago we took to around 1,000 calories per day. Norm hasn't had a beer in that time and he is just really beginning to get his shape again. I believe I have lost around 10 pounds. I do a few exercises which help out more.
Well Jean I think you have a good idea there about mother's birthday. We haven't ever had anything t6o make an event worth remembering and I sincerely believe she would treasure it much. I have about 46 as a possibility. You did well to get all these addresses. I will help all I can. Do you think a week will be sufficient? I guess it will. You can make it here before that and we can go up from here.
Your invitations sound good. I don't know what D.V. means and how are we to know they won't bring the family along and what would happen about food. Maybe we should specific something, eh! Think it over. How about Aunt Minnie and Reneta? Does mother think they should be invited?
Well I have Jack and Una Buchanan' address which is 168 George St., Belleville and Kent and Nan Buchanan, 2683 Colman St., Ottawa, Ontario. I just at this 10 pm got Jack on the phone and we had a nice chat. He seems as much in the dark as we are with our relatives. Anyhow, I reminded him of a few and he seemed interested. Well, Jean, guess I'll close for now. I hope Doug is better with his tooth troubles. Maybe some day one will listen tour advice. It's really surprising how valuable it might be. So long, Annabel" letter to Jean Anderson from Annabel (Adams) Hardwick dated Jan 29 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.

I had mine free also. Charles brought me a lovely mum plant. I can grow better violets than he and been a good gardner. I had lovely cards from them all. ?Milton's was the nicest - 2 $10 enclosed. At Xmas he sent us a nice box, mine a ?narilon white sweater. Dad a jacket. I recall it not a sweater, that they must wear these. The girls at Xmas gave me a 2-piece dress but it was too large and had to be changed. I got $8 back on account of sale. I like it a lot. Verna had a nice trip and came back rested but it was too cool to go in bathing. Michael is 14, very tall for his age and a good kid. I think he will be more help to Verna than John. Her address is 8 Paula Blvd., Toronto 14. I hope your party for mother comes off well. Earl seems very nervous about driving now so I know he wouldn't unless Marsh took a notion to take us. Dora Aikins doesn't drive you knew she had a slight stroke. We called there the last time we were down and Fred and Frank had just come home from their fishing trip all summer. A Mrs. Lee's son from here married Doris Aikins and I hear from her that Frank has been in hospital. Earl and I have bad colds the first this winter. I knot socks for red cross about all I have done this winter and may not be able to much longer as both my thumbs are stiff from arthritis. Do you have any arthritis or rheumatism?
Youi will have a nice holiday all by yourself. Nice that Doug came in that property. We have just sold our little farm at Stratton. With Love dear Jean, Ma Van" letter to Jean Anderson from Ma Van dated Feb 19 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: No year included, but the party is mentioned, so this is in response to an early letter Jean sent to her about the party planned for March 27 1966.
Note: Who is this person? "Ma Van" is signature. She is 77 in 1966, so born 1889. Who is "Marsh"? Stratton may be Alberta??9
  • Note: 7 March 1966; Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "March 7, 1966; Dear Jean; Received your kind invitation to attend your mother's 86th birthday celebration on March 27th. I would surely love to drop in and see her and all the family but couldn't be sure this long ahead. My time is not the same. Sometimes I have to work over the weekend. I'm only part time and do four days a week. I'm happy to know you will get together and I'm sure your mother will enjoy it very much. I have a new granddaughter this winter, Janice Ann, she was born Dec. 28th and now weighs 12 lbs. She is real cute, just starting to notice everything. Suppose your boys are almost finished high school. Time goes so fast I can't keep up. If I don't get up give me a call when you come to Belleville. I go to work at seven tomorrow so that means early rising. Scotty (Ida Mae Campbell) died in 28th January, had a coronary. I believe her mother is still living.
Must go now, all the best to you and yours. Thanks again for you kind invitation. Marion W." letter to Jean Anderson from Marion W. Eagles dated Mar 7 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Marion is Marion (Chase) Eagles, daughter of Ross Chase and Florence Hayes and wife of Max Eagles.9
  • Note: 8 March 1966; 1348 Bertram St., Kelowna, Okanagan Dist., British Columbia; "1348 Bertram St., Kelowna B.C.; (no date); Dear Jean; I sure think your family have chosen a wonderful way to celebrate your mother's 86th birthday. I sure would like very much to be there, but am afraid I cannot make it. You see I have planned to go to see my relatives in Ontario in May so have been planning this for a long time, even my hair a permanent in May so it is a mess now and Tom and I never travelled much in the cold weather, always a danger of snow slides so I never plan to travel until about May.
Haven't even put in for my pass yet and since they taken odd the "Dominion" I don't know if I can even get one.
If I don't have to stay home as Feb 14th I had to buy a new refrigerator, mine just played right out, could not be fixed unless I put a lot of money out in it. So decided on a new one. Same with my T.V. in December so I have had a lot extra expenses lately. Think I'll be lucky if I do get east this year. We are having a rainy day but have been very lucky, should not complain. February was really a nice month this year. As I am president of our Senior Citizens Association I am kept busy with that and my secretary has been very sick also. It is nice I have something extra to go to and be interested in. Well Jean, I sure hope everything comes off wonderful for you and that you all have a nice time. Give my love to your mom and the rest of the family. Nice to hear from you. Sorry, I don't see how I could make it. Love, Ethel Buchanan" letter to Jean Anderson from Ethel Buchanan dated ?Mar 8 1966?, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Ethel Buchanan was Ethel Gamond and, in 1966, was the second wife of Thomas Wragg Buchanan. They had been married in 1936 in Manitoba but now lived in Kelowna, BC.

  • Note: 8 March 1966; 296 Dufferin Ave., Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Miss Amelia Hayes, 296 Dufferin Ave., Trenton, Ont.; March 8, 1966; Dear Jean; What a pleasant surprise to open a letter & find an invitation that promises so much pleasure. I hope ?D.V.? to be there. Alice has not received an invitation and as I know you would not want to leave her out, I am sending her address which you probably do not know. 95 Henry St., Trenton, Ont. Looking forward to seeing you. Amelia" letter to Jean Anderson from Amelia Hayes dated Mar 8 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Amelia Hayes was a teacher in Trenton. She was born at Carrying place, never married. She was a daughter of Henry Wallace Hayes and Mary Ann Stuart, so closely connected to the Stuart clan. The Alice she speaks of here would likely be Alice Jane Stuart, wife of John Galna.9
  • Note: 8 March 1966; Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Tues., March 8 (1966); Dear Jean; Received you letter yesterday. I hope you didn't get hurt from that explosion. Those gas appliances seem to be doing much damage lately. I don't know if gas has any higher a rate than oil for blowing up or not. But I do know of many gas appliances tragedies lately. I think the ones like your built high would be a greater danger as they are on eye level. You are very lucky. Bev called me yesterday as she got her mail first. I was beginning to get anxious and Norm was too. Bev thinks even great grand children won't even attend as its going to be so crowded. She is having a sitter and she wanted me to let you count on her and Moe. I have had my chest reaction (cold) again this year. I'm beginning to wonder if I come from a long line of hereditary in that respect. I got a new drug Dr. Hartt ordered for me. After the first dose I went to bed but 2 hours after I took the second one I took a very sharp feeling that went to my brain back to the arm and the ends of my fingers. I took sick to my stomach and was talking to Babe on the phone. I had to leave an lay down. After ten minutes I was fine. So I ended up just taking one dose at night. I went up to the Dr. the following Friday for my lame arm and a check. He wouldn't do anything for my arm but I finally asked him for some diet pills which I got two dozen of. Said I should weigh 147 so I have some more to go. Norm is in Peterboro today getting his kit filled p with tools again. He has been at Healey Falls working and seems well. He gave up beer from Jan 4 to last weekend and I think he lost quite a lot. He likes outdoor work so much.
Well Jean I found all our pink and white decorations which I had for Bev's wedding. I don't know if they would be usable or not. He has a new truck now so perhaps we can use the car for our needs during the week. I also have this table Norm made me at Christmas. Norm could put it on the truck.
I think probably you are right about Aunt Minnie. I am sorry for her. Now Jean I will drop a line if I think of anything. I am sure it will all work out. I will be looking for you on the Sat. of the 19th. Come before if you can. Give us a call when you get in. Give my regards to Doug and the boys. Much love, Annabel" letter to Jean Anderson from Annabel (Adams) Hardwick dated Mar 8 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Annabel is Annabel Adams, sister of Jean, Clara and Rex, and is married to Norman Hardwick. Their children are Bill, Bev and Larry.9
  • Note: 8 March 1966; Belleville, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Hi Folk; Mother writes such interesting and newsy letters, she has told you most of the highlights.
There is no date on this letter, so estimate around the same time as the other pre-party correspondence of family members. Assuming Clara was living in Belleville at this time?9
  • Note: 9 March 1966; Toronto, York Co., Ontario; "Toronto; March 9th, 1966; Dear Jean; Well here I am back in Toronto again. I had an enjoyable time with Bill and Beth, they have the finest baby boy, with curly hair and seldom ever cries. He made strange with me at first, and he is cutting teeth, has four and when he laughs he shows them.
Mrs. Prestman was very kind and she has her own car. She drove us to Fergus and Orton and we were invited to her home twice. Beth had a birthday and Bill bought a while meal for nine people. It cost ten dollars, but we sure enjoyed it. Her mother made a bit two-layer cake with candles. They all gave her gifts. I was doing a cushion with the yarn and huck toweling you purchases and she was delighted with it. The colors matched her living room walls. Bill intends tiling my kitchen ceiling. It may be at Easter. Beth expecting in July. I think she is to ambitious for her strength. We made bread and buns. She is a good cook and a sewer, made her sister Karen a waist for her birthday. They took me to the barn to see their pigs. (Priestmans) I never saw so many pigs in one barn. Bill had a sow had eighteen little ones, but the weather was cold and eight died. They are fixing up an old house with high ceilings and cold but I was feeling really well and no colds. Well Rex phones to tell me he would take me to Clara's. That was last Sunday. She is as busy as ever. We are planning on going next Saturday if all goes well.
Our weather is so changeable, 42 degrees today. It may be storming tomorrow. Res is planning on building a new home in Walkerton as that house will be torn down. I heard a new Post Office would be built there. We heard from Annabel. I don't think she is feeling well. She has trouble with her arm.
I had a letter from Aaron. We wrote Steve to build fires. I hope he is better. I wrote Myrtle Chesterfield but I'm thinking she is not in her home. Mrs. Wootton is staying with till Easter, her birthday is the 17th of March. I suppose Doug and Mark arrived safely. I enjoyed seeing them and Mrs. Anderson. When are you coming up? I do hope our weather will warm up. We have no snow up here. Our one violet has never stopped blooming, one in bud. Frances spent the weekend here, she is fairly well. She needs glasses.
I really can't tell you much, but Clara has been over. They wanted me to look after the children while Joanne was in hospital but I told them I was not able." letter to Jean Anderson from Stella Adams dated Mar 9 1966, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: This letter is clearly to Jean Anderson, and I am assuming it is from her mother, Stella (Buchanan) Adams, although there is no signature at the end. It is the "interesting and newsy" letter referred to in one of the other letters.9

But it just can not be as this is realy a bad time, now there is so many sick with flu at present, not only the Pts but as well and I just could not get away. I guess you will have heard of our terrible storm. I was one of the lucky ones tho. It happened to be my day off. But Saturday morning had to go and Oh boy I got a cab to within half a short block of the home and it took me nearly half an hour to walk that short way. The snow was about 3 feet deep and in drifts to around five feet. I felt as if I had did a days work before I ever got started and I never did get home Saturday, had to work two eight hour shifts in a row and have not got over that as yet. I do not get any holidays until Oct. Will have three week then and am going to take a week in May to get rested for the summer.
I have a month every year if I want it as I have been there so long, this is my thirteenth year at the same nursing home. I get pretty tired but as Jack is so good he is retired and he look after the ste. And we have his youngest son living with us he is twenty-two so all I do is plan the meals and he dose the cooking, washing and cleaning. All I do is the ?ironing? and baking so I do pretty well. I also make good money which does not go a miss those days. I am going to try and talk him into going east this fall if I can, but he has children at he west coast as well, so kind of have a hard time. But he has a brother and sister living in Toronto. He has seven children, all married, but the one with us and of course I have three with only Ruth single and you know how girls are. They went to get out on there own. So she lives up town near her work. She work for C.C.M. Bill, the oldest, is married and has one little girl 2 years tomorrow. Louise has three boys and one girl, so we are all one big happy family. Well, my dear, if you ever make up your mind to come to Winnipeg, don't forget, we will always welcome you and family with open arms. If I do get Jack to go east this year, we are sure going to look up some of you people this time. We wish we could be there but its not possible. We are neither one very good, both had the flu and now Earl has the gout in his gig toe on the foot his ankle was broken and I take a needle once a week for arthritis, both my thumbs are affected and no doubt will get worse. For your age you seemed to be in good health.
It has seemed a long winter with us and will be glad to see the grass growing. I have tulips coming up. The violets you gave me are lovely but they all grow too large with me, perhaps I water them too much, but Earl keeps the furnace too high. I had a lovely ?reunion? for my birthday in Feb and the girls brought me a Chinese dinner and cake. Doris has just passed her 25 years with G.E. and they gave her some kind of a pin and in summer take them on a bus trip. We were all there for a family party the 10th dec. before ?Venra? went to Florida to spend Xmas with Jack's mother and sister. I went to our county Presbyterial in Simcoe with some ladies and it was a nice day out. I hear from a Mrs. Lee here that Dora Aikins has been in hospital. Her son married Doris Aikins and I met them. So few of the old ones left at Centenary. My Uncle Allan Davis? Had a large plot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto and my cousin Eleanor the only one left of the family offered the rest of the plot to me so Marion and family and we have it. Since Grandma C. and I accepted your kind invitation to be present at a buffet luncheon on Sunday, March the 17th, in honour of your mother, she has had a little set back. And, although she is up and around again, we feel the trip and excitement would be too much for her. As you know, she suffered a severe heart attack last fall and last week she had another slight one. Naturally, she is very disappointed but admits herself she is afraid the trip would be too tiring. I regret Grandma and I are unable to attend as besides Grandma C. I have my aged mother living with us. Thanks you so much for asking us. We shall be thinking of you and trust you have a lovely day and enjoyable time. Sincerely Yours, Edith Caughey. I am sending this to your mother's address in case you are already there." letter to Jean Anderson from Edith Caughey dated ?Mar 20 1966?, from the Jean Anderson Collection.
Note: Not clear what relation there might be to Edith Caughey. I do see an obit for an Edith Caughey in 2004, age 96, so born 1908. Her husband was Gordon C. Caughey. Is Edith Caughey a friend or relative?9

It was quite an experience for all of us to get together with our kith and kin as you so well expressed it. Driving back to Ottawa we were all busily sorting out the different relatives we'd met and enjoyed. I would have like to have taken up more of your time but could see you were well and truly occupied most of the afternoon. Anyway, you must have a terrific feeling of achievement for, to organize a luncheon of this magnitude and from so far afield is an enormous feat and deserves all our congratulations. I though Aunt Stella looked beautiful - that weave dress suited her coloring so well. She seemed to take everybody in her stride. Hope she's not feeling to tired after so much excitement. As for you, Jean, I expect you're looking forward to putting up your feet and relaxing. Trust you'll get the opportunity to do so when you get home. Would you please convey our thanks too to Clare, Annabel and Rex for making such a happy reunion possible. Love from all the Ottawa Buchanan branch of the family! • Note: 28 June 1969; Trenton, Hastings Co., Ontario; "Trenton, June 28, 1969; Dear Jean: I was so glad to hear that you & your husband had such a nice trip, also it was so nice of you to tell me about it. My trip was in 1938, so many changes. I was in Eng., Scot.,& France. I especially enjoyed London, one could spend so long there & not see all the interesting places. We crossed from Dover to Calais going to France from La Havre to Southampton when returning. I was disappointed when Ire. Wasn't included in the tour. What a pity that Eng. Has lost so much of her strength. Yesterday we attended a weddinging Lindsay. Stuart Chase's son, Kenneth was married there. Florence, my sister, went home with her daughter & husband to Montreal. They will be moving to St. John's Nfld. Shortly. Where Max will be the head of Canada Air. Shall we meet in the summer? • Note: 12 January 1971; 6115 Oakland Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia; "Dear Jean: In case my name doesn't register with you, I'm a cousin. I was Marion Chase daughter of Florence & Ross Chase, Carrying Place, Ont. Amelia Hayes is my aunt. The reason for writing is Auntie had a black school scribbles that she had recorded the Stuart side of the family in. I seem to be the only member of my family interested so Auntie had said it was to be mine when I seen her at Christmas. I reminded her of the scribbles she said she had lent it to you when you were making plans for the family picnic & you had not returned it. It is very important to me so wanted to remind you and ask if you would please return it to Auntie of me. My husband was moved from St. John's Nfld. In August to Halifax. We did enjoy Nfld. So much & was only beginning to feel at home when this move came, so it means starting all over again. Our only child, Bill, was married Oct 24th in MSL? Which is home to him & I still think of as home. Since we kept our cottage in the Laurentians, I was their most summer & fall & up until the wedding. After all the excitement of summer with old friends & wedding, it has been rather dull here. We were to Trenton & Carrying Place a few days before Xmas then spent Xmas in Mtl? With Bill & Rose Marry. Auntie said your mother broker her hip- hope she is getting on well. It is hard on an older person.
Wishing you & your family the very best in 1971. Sincerely, Marion Eagles" letter to Jean Anderson from Marion (Chase) Eagles dated Jan 12 1971, from Jean Anderson Papers.9

Anderson, 30 Lascelles Blvd., Toronto, Ontario; Dear Dr. Jay; You will be momentarily puzzled by the enclosed copy of the Stuart history but will see the light when you read on.
First of all, would you and your family like to rejoin your mother's kith & kin each year at the Stuart Picnic?
Next, I am trying to fill in the missing links for the tree, because if it starts as a Stuart Tree it has to continue as long as one make is left to carry on the line, or go into oblivion. You will note that Benjamin Stuart had one surviving son, Tom, as of 1966. He would be your 1st cousin. I recall you mother, I believe, telling me in 1966 that he living in the States. Have you any information which might assist me in tracing him and his family? Also, could you supply me with the Pearson history, and Stuarts, as well as your own? Your mother and mine were 1st cousins, making your mother my 2nd cousin, so you and I are 3rd cousins, making us kissing cousins. My husband and I are in the transition stage. We both grew up near Belleville, both our mothers live here; we've been in Saint John for 24 years, have a summer place near the sea, which agrees with Doug's hay fever during the season. Have sold our townhouse in Saint John this year, will be moving into a town house in Belleville a year from now. D.V. and meanwhile were temporarily putting up in an apt. at 260 Germain St., Saint John, NB. I'm up here for the Family Picnic. Shal be going back next Tuesday. • Note: 12 August 1972; 1718 Playfair Dr., Ottawa, Carleton Co., Ontario; "1718 Playfair Dr., Ottawa, ON K1H 5X6; August 12, 1972; Dear Jean: As I wrote the date on this letter I recall that it is "Derry Day" and my grandfather Stuart took me to a "Derry Day" celebration in Campbellford about 46 years ago. Your letter and family tree came at an interesting time for me. My father died a year ago (just six days short of 100) and it was only last month that his estate was settled. I sold the family home in Campbellford but before doing so I disposed of the contents here and there. I didn't have time to go over all the little items which I thought might interest me, so I stuffed them in boxes and brought them back to Ottawa. This past week my wife has been a craft instructor in a girls' camp in Quebec (she is also very interested in art as I gather you are too) and I have had some time to sort through some of my collections from Campbellford. The batch I got into last night included several items that my mother put away when my grandfather died in 1939 and I doubt if they have been disturbed since. For example, (1) the funeral card of my great uncle William John Stuart (No. 1 on your family tree) - died March 20, 1924 at the age of 85. I didn't know (or remember) that he was married until I noted it on your family tree. (2) The marriage certificate of my grandfather David Christopher Stuart to Abbie Valleau (No. IX on your family tree) - Dec 22 1880. (3) The funeral car of my grandmother - April 8, 1924 at the age of 65. (4) A picture of one of the Stuart picnics at Cobourg. I am enclosing it, I thought you might be interested. I don't know what year it is or even whether I was there or not, but I recognize my grandfather, Ben Buchanan (4), one of the Nie girls. Perhaps you will recognize some others. I would like it back sometime at your convenience. As I came upon such items as this, I thought how unfortunate it is that we come upon them too late. There were letters from the Pearsons in Rochester dated 1939 when my grandfather was in hospital with his broken hip. Unfortunately, I don't have Nellie's address. She would certainly be glad to supply all the information on the Pearson family. She might even have some information on Tom Stuart. She and my sister-in-law, Helen, keep close contact. Perhaps you have already been in touch with her for some of the other information. It is very possible that she might be interested in a copy of the family tree for her daughter, Mary K. Her address is: Mrs. Helen Anderson, Campbellford, Ont. Now for what little information I can add: My grandfather, David Christopher Stuart was born in 1959 and died in 1939 at 81. My mother was born in 1886 and died in 1969 at 83. My father was born in 1871 and died in 1971 - 100 ears less 6 days. My brother Stuart Alexander was born in 1912 and died in 1954 aged 41. He married Helen Thomas in 1936. They have two daughters: Laura Lee born in 1938 (I think) She is a mongolion child and has been in a provincial hospital for the retarded for many years; and Mary K., born in 1948. She is a school teacher and is unmarried. Now, for myself. I was born in 1920, married Geertruide Emsbroek (a girl I met in Holland during the war) in 1947. We have 3 boys and 1 girl. David Christopher (named after his grandfather Stuart) born 1948 - unmarried (He is an artist - in-embryo by the way). James Charles, born 1950, Ian Alexander born 1951, Audrey Elizabeth born 1952, all unmarried. Although I never knew the Stuart side of the family so well, I liked what I knew of it and I would appreciate knowing when and where the Stuart Picnic is to be held. Now that I am getting older I find that the things of the past are holding more interest for me. I still have fairly deep roots in Northumberland and an excuse for a yearly pilgrimage back will no doubt become more and more attractive to me. I am also enclosing a picture of my father and mother on their 60th wedding anniversary in 1969. My mother died 3 months later of a pulmonary embolus following a minor operation. My father lived until 1971 - mostly alone - when he died following a stroke. You may keep this picture if you wish. I am not sure that I have ever met you but I look forward to that occasion and I would like to thank you for your efforts in giving the tree the "tender loving care" which I am sure will ensure its survival. Sincerely, Jay" letter to Jean Anderson from Jay Anderson, dated Aug 12 1972, from the Jean Anderson Collection.9
  • Note: 27 August 1972; 260 Germain St., Saint Johns, New Brunswick; "260 Germain St.; Saint John, N.B; August 27, 1972; Mrs. Walter Murray (Anna Galna); 47 Roseview Ave., Richmond Hill, Ont.; Dear Anna: Have you attended any of the Stuart Family Picnics at Cobourg? They were activated in 1966, after Mother*e 86th Birthday Party at the hotel in Colborne, which you and Helen, and families, attended, if I recall correctly. Anyhow, the enclosed Rough Draft of the STUART history will give you the details, and I would appreciate it greatly if you will fill in your father's birthdate and death; also your sister Mamie's birthdate and death, whom she married; and Carmen's and Helen's, if you can. I could send Helen a copy, but it will appear in a final analysis when I have obtained as many of the missing links as is possible. Have you any information on Great Uncle Ben Stuart's son, Tom? If so, please pass it on. My beloved Mother died suddenly August 18th, after a week in hospital in a coma. She attended the Picnic Aug. 6th, as did I, and was the Belle of the Ball, but got a nasty sunburn on her face and head (without a hat) which she said was quite painful. I left for the East the following Tuesday, when we had a wonderfully poignant farewell. Clara said she complained on Friday of a terrible headache, lapsed into a coma shortly after; died one week later and was burled August 21st. Life won't be the same without her T.L.C. and words of wisdom. Trust you and yours are all well. Do bring me up to date, and let's stay in touch. Doug (my husband) retired Aug. 31st; we're moving to Belleville next year to a town house his Uncle left him, so it's back to good ole Ontario, I hope. Kind regards to your husband and family.

  • Note: 27 August 1972; 260 Germain St., Saint John, New Brunswick; "260 Germain St.; Saint John, N.B; August 27, 1972; Dear Stuart & Howard (Smith): Father Time has no respect for the wishes of the living, and I guess "That's Life!" as Frank Sinatra says by way of song. I remember vividly Mother phoning me in March of this year to tell me she'd just had word that Aunt Abbie had passed away. She took it very hard, as she'd always had a deep affection for your Mother. I recall saying to her, "Well, Mother, she had been an invalid for a long while, and I'm sure she was happy to be at rest!"
So now I wish to convey my sympathy to you and yours in the loss of your loved one. Six years ago last March, when we celebrated Mother's 86th birthday at the hotel in Colborne, it was the wish of Kent, Alan and Charles Buchanan that we reactivate the Stuart Family Picnic, and in August that year this wish was realized. Also, then, I was asked to prepare a History of the Stuart Clan in the New World. Distance from the core (Ontario) was my biggest detractor, but this year I did get it to the Rough Draft stage, with many, many missing links. As I now have the information regarding your whereabouts, and as I need the details regarding your family, also Howard's, whose address I don't have, I wonder if you'd be kind enough to forward the enclosed stamped envelope on to him, along with the Rough Draft. If you wish to keep the Rough Draft for a reference, that will be alright, but I'd like you to forward it on to Howard after you have mailed me the following information for fill-ins: IV. • Note: 27 August 1972; 260 Germain St., Saint John, New Brunswick; "260 Germain St.; Saint John, N.B.; August 27, 1972; Dear Cousin Helen Anderson-by-marriage: Since 1966 I have been trying to complete the STUART Family Tree, in fits and starts. We sold our town house here in February, and our two sons are now "on their own so I find I have time to concentrate on other things, albeit my heart is heavy. I prepared a Rough Draft in time for the Family Picnic at Cobourg on Aug. 6th, and spent an enjoyable day with those members of the Clan who attended. Mother was the eldest one (92 last March 28th, and as porky as you please, with her usual Irish wit); it was overcast, but she still got a bad bum, minus a hat, and so did I. She complained that hers hurt. The following night (Aug. 7th) I had an accident (tore the ligaments in my right foot, and hobbled around until time for my departure East Tuesday noon.) She worried considerably over my misfortune, and I sensed she was seeing me for the last time. We said a very fond and special farewell. I got back here Wednesday, went to Camp Friday night; an hour after we left for our retreat in the woods the call came that she had had a severe headache that morning; shortly after lapsed into a coma; t alt on to hospital. I got the message Sun. P.M., took the next train out, but she never rallied, and one week later to the exact minute she breathed her last. Was buried on Monday - Picnic on the 6th; her funeral on the 21st" It was nice she didn't suffer - just slept away, as she wished to, and no burden to anyone, also as she had wished. Her night nurse said she would loved to have known her. But the wheels of the gods keep grinding, and now back to "The Clans" Jay Anderson wrote me a most informative run-down of his branch, in which ho stated you and Nellie(Pearson) Randall keep close contact. Her mother (Mary Stuart Pearson) had 5 children, as is noted on the enclosed Rough Draft. I have filled in the relevant data supplied by jay, and in his letter he also mentions that Nellie Randall might even have some information on Tom Stuart. I have been trying for a long while to locate Tom Stuart. If unable to, then William* Stuart*s line ceases to be. If he is located, but has no son, or sons, to carry on, then that signals the end of the line. In any event, I would dearly love to write the final chapter by filling in my Great Uncle Ben's lineage. Jay suggests that you might be interested in a copy of the Family Tree for your daughter, Mary K. As the enclosed one is merely a Rough Draft, perhaps you would send it on to Nellie Randall, and if she can furnish me with the information regarding the Pearsons, plus Tom Stuart's whereabouts etc., then I'll be that much closer to the finale. With kind personal regards, and a thank-you in advance for any assistance you can render to The Cause, Sincerely, (J.A.)" letter to Mrs. Helen Anderson from Jean Anderson, dated Aug 27 1972, from the Jean Anderson Collection.9

I couldn't wish her back, but am sure going to miss her t.l.c. and words of wisdom. I was able at long last to prepare a Rough Draft of the Stuart History, albeit many missing links, and made the special effort to attend the Picnic Aug. 6th. As I don't have Dorothy and Victor's address, which I should for the Mailing List, was wondering if you'd kindly fill in the GALNA missing links and send it on to me. As previously stated, this is only a Rough Draft, but you may keep it if you wish, as long as you send me the desired info. You will note the WRAGG/ROY etc. branch is blank. Perhaps Aunt Gertie Mitchell might have some recollections, now that Mother is gone. Her address is: Apt. 209, 1255 Richmond Rd., Scarborough. I trust you are keeping well. Would dearly love to see you. I had such a lovely letter from her at Xmas which is about the only time I seem to here from anyone. I have had such a time with my hands and arms. I have arthritis and sometime it is rather hard to write, but will try and do my best to answer what you wish to know. I now my dad came west when he was 21 which would be about 1897. He farmed at Rosewood, Manitoba, he married Evelyn Louise Chalmers Nov 9 1907. Myself, Iolah Elizabeth was born Mar 15, 1910. Gordon Victor was born May 24, 1911. He sold the farm and we moved to Winnipeg April 1, 1920 and worked for CPR until he was 67 years old. He remarried Ethel Gamond Feb 14 1936. I married Horace Kelly on June 4, 1934 and William Thomas was born Feb 26 1936.
Louise Shelia was born Dec 19, 1937; Ruth Roberta was born May 27, 1944. Gordon Victor married Kathleen Pringle. I don't know the date, but think it was 24, 1934. No family.

He was so mean with dad when he was so ill. I remarried John (Jack) 14 years ago and have never been so happy as now living in a lovely new apt., moved here in April. It has 120 units and people all around our own age. The children all come to see us often which makes it nice and also take out for diner as they nearly all have cars. Well my Dear, I do hope that you will be able to make out all this terrible writing and do hope to here from you again in near future. • Note: 26 September 1972; Winnipeg, Manitoba; "Winnipeg; September 26, 1972; Dear Jean; Received your most welcome letter yesterday and I sure am sorry I took so long sending it back to you. But I think I have a good excuse. I got my daughter Ruth to make me a copy of it all and as she dose not live in Winnipeg we only see them about every two weeks then as you will see I sent our family on to you. Jack and I moved into this lovely Senior Citizens home last April and have no stairs to climb and the rent is a lot better for us. When I was working we made out fine but then I got arthritis. It started in my foot now that is OK, but have it in my hands and shoulders that is why my writing is so bad. I try to keep my hands busy as that is the only thing that will help. Jack has not been well for some years, has heart condition, but it has improved since we moved here. But the Dr. dose not want him to travel no more than 50 miles at a time as he really is not up it. He is quite a lot older than I am, 75 years. I'm the baby of 62. Do you know Jean who long it is since we saw each other, when I was 19 a long time ago. When Grandma Buchanan was so ill just after my mother passed away. Now my dear if you do come west our phone no. is 475-6910 and we sure would love to see you. Do hope when you get this you will have got the big fat letter. I don't hear from Ethel Buchanan at all and don't want to and as for Gordon if I never see him again it will be to soon. Things happen that cannot be put down on paper.
Well my dear, I guess I had better close or you will be thinking I'm an old cat. Lot of love, Ever Iolah. Will be looking for a letter or call. I.C." letter to Jean Anderson from Iolah Cartman dated Sep 26 1972, from the Jean Anderson Collection.9

Yes, Auntie told me she insisted you keep the black book & it is fine with me as long as you knew where I am when you finish with it.
Since you are returning to Belleville it will be best if when you are through you return it to Harry & Jean as I'm sure their address will never change. Max is retired from Aid Canada as of the end of this month. It is early as he is only 53 but business today isn't what it was 35 years ago & that is the years he has with the Co. We have bought a house in Florida & plan to spend the winters there & summers at our cottage in the Laurentians. We will keep our pass & privileges so will be back to Montreal for Xmas and any other occasions that should arise. In that way, we are very fortunate. Max is now doing his last tour of Eastern Region & I joined him this weekend in St. John's Nfld. We were there for 11 months starting in 1969 & loved every minute of it. The people are wonderful. I am keeping the rough draft & encl. missing information re my own family. Maybe next year when we will be at the lake full time we could plan to attend the family picnic. All the best to you & your husband on retirement, we are really looking forward to it.
Our Florida address is: 3700 Mainlands Blvd. N, Pinellas Park, Florida, 33565. We are 20 minutes from Tampa Airport. Pinellas Park is a suburb of St. Petersburg. So the book would never get lost. Harry's address is: Carrying Place, RR#1, K0K 1L0 …. Is the best bet. Mother has such a fabulous memory. How I wish I had recorded some of the stories she used to tell us. I still miss she & dad but realize we were so fortunate to have them so long. Certainly, understand your feelings at the loss of your mother. Sincerely, Marion Eagles ... last page ... Truth is, I wrote to Brockville to get the dates of Carm's children and this slowed things up a bit. We were so sorry to hear about your mother. Her whole family will feel a great loss as she was a wonderful person. I remember her so vividly at the party at Colborne, she was so charming & the Belle of the Ball. As you said in your letter she was still the Belle at the recent picnic at Cobourg. We have been unable to attend the picnics as Walter (my husband) has emphysema. He has spent five months in hospital over a period of two years, consequently, we don't get around very much. Our son Paull (26) who is with C.P. Air at Calgary is home this week and we are so pleased even though the visit is short. He was in Vancouver for five years but got a transfer back to Malton when Walter was so ill a year ago. One of these five years he spent a winter in Hawaii & is now at Calgary. They do get around when working with the airlines. I really enjoyed the history of the Stuart clan and it brought back memories of my youth spent in Trenton, when we as children visited several of the names mentioned in the family tree. When I wrote to my niece Lois for information she said she would love to have a copy & I know Helen would too. You have undertaken a big project but I am sure it is most interesting & worthwhile. It is nice that you will be moving to Belleville next year and will be close to the other members of your family. I understand Clara is living there too. In case you have extra copies, I am writing down the addresses of Helen (my sister), my niece and two nephews. If this is too much to ask perhaps Lois could have copies made4 for her two brothers. I set it too far aside and it became misplaced but perhaps you can look upon this as a New Year's car rather than as a belated Christmas card. Thank you for your greetings and for identifying so many people in the picnic picture. When I saw the names you put in them I remember him or her. And I enjoyed reading your Christmas letter. You have indeed had a busy year. Such years seem to occur in cycles so I hope 1973 is not quite so hectic for you. Although 1970 and 1971 were fairly busy for us after my mother died on Christmas eve in 1969 and we were trying to help my father cope with things alone in Campbellford while we were in Toronto. 1972 has been considerably quieter. ?Truus? and I are alone with 3 of our children in Toronto and (since September) one in Holland. We did spend time in Holland in September but air travel makes thins so much easier that such a holiday causes little more commotion than a trip to Trenton from Campbellford in the 1930s. We are looking forward to having David (25) and James (23) arrive later today for the holiday week. I shall be interested to hear where they are "at" in December 1972. David is at some stage with his art and James is at some stage with his film making. It would be interesting to know if they have found a road to follow but I try to press the enquiry. We expect Audrey (20) tomorrow. She dropped out of her 2nd year at York in November and is at present a cocktail waitress at the Board of Trade Country Club in Toronto. She talked of going to Paris in January but again, I shall be interested to hear where she is "at". We hear from Ian (22) in Holland quite regularly. He was very impressed with a trip he made to Austria and his letters are interesting to read.
Well, Jean, we are off to get a Christmas tree now. I hope this letter catches up with you somewhere. If you happen to be in Florida when you receive it, Truus's drawing of our house in Ottawa engulfed in snow should give you added pleasure at being in the sunshine. Hope to see you in 1973. Now we're getting ready to head back east tomorrow to our retreat where the weather is much more pleasant. In the meantime, I have been trying to reach you by phone with a follow up of my letter to you dated Aug. 27, 1972, asking for information for the Stuart history. Perhaps it went astray. Jay mentioned you keep in touch with your cousin, Nellie Randall. He also mentioned that Nellie might have some information on Tom Stuart. He would be Nellie's first cousin. I shall try reaching you by phone again today and tomorrow before we leave but if unable to, could I trouble you to send me Nellie (Pearson) Randall's address. Is it Rochester? Would dearly love to complete the history this year. Jay has hoped to make the picnic but didn't. Kent Buchanan, Nan, Jim and Sheila motored up from Ottawa. We missed you. Maitland & Jean will have told you all about it. Maitland tells me you have extensive information (birthdates etc.) Irene, so I'm writing you with this in mind. All efforts to contact Stuart & Howard Smith have been in vain. Could you give me their birth dates, whom they married, their children's names, birthdates and, if possible, whom they married. I know Stuart has a boy & a girl, all grown up by now. Also know that Howard & Mary have 2 boys and a girl, all grown up. Also I believe the boys at least are married. Seems mother told me they had married & were living in Alberta, but I am not sure. Perhaps a phone call to Stuart would get this info. In addition, could obtain the names of their second wives. Do you have the birth dates of Aunt Amelia's family? I telephoned Mary Leckey last year the day of the Picnic & got her family's info, but she couldn't remember any of her brother's or Helen's dates. There again, I'm beat because I can't rouse any of the western clan. I'm wondering if Aunt Gertie has any information on Emily Stuart Wragg whose daughter, Mary married Maitland Roy. No doubt Maitland was named after him - only guessing. I recall, I believe, mother telling me that Maitland Roy was a photographer in Hamilton. In that family were Bea Wragg and Tim Wragg. They'd all be 1st cousins of your mother. Can she give us any clues as to their whereabouts? Perhaps when we get back here for the winter months I could take a run up to Hamilton. Better still check with you. In case you have mislaid your Rough Draft. I'm enclosing another. Jay Anderson told me that his sister-in-law, Helen, could give me Mary (Stuart) Pearson's information as she is in close touch with Nellie (Pearson) Randall, but even there I've hit a wall, because Helen hasn't answered my letter and for the past 3 days & nights I've tried to reach her in Campbellford by phone without success. She may be away to Camp. If you have any info on this branch - e.g. Mary Pearson's family, whom I believe live in Rochester, I'd appreciate it. Tomorrow Doug and I head back east to our camp where its much more pleasant in the mountain and near the sea. We have a mailing address and phone at: Mrs. D. G. M5M 2S1; August 9, 1974; Dear Jean; It is sad that the first time I write to you should be to bring news of Stuart's untimely passing. The cancer that we thought was in check, recurred and in spite of many cobalt treatments and all kinds of care we were anable to check it. It just took over & grew so fast - on a Saturday morning he was unable to breathe or swallow - rushed to hospital & worked on him for three days, but to no avail. He was composed & in good spirits, but just slipped away from me in the middle of a conversation. I asked God not to let him suffer & I guess he heard me & took him to rest. I sure to miss him - but I still have his home & His garden to care for & as long as I live he won't be far from me. It seems funny not to hear him in the house & small his pipe - but he is far better off than being an invalid - he couldn't have stood that. It is too bad that he couldn't have lived long enough to come down for the visit we had planned this summer. But perhaps when I can drive better (the lessons were interrupted) I can come to visit and we can talk some more. We did so enjoy your short visit last fall! Guess you could say I've been out of the mainstream ever since that terrible accident on Dec. 3, 1978, and now I am just beginning to come out of hibernation after fighting a Virus A flu bug, which has felled me for the past 5 weeks. I'm allergic to about everything under the sun, but was forced to submit to a powerful antibiotic called Keflex for 6 days to get the thing under control and after taking it for 3 or 4 days I reacted with a Yeast infection, so am just about finished treatment for that, which required another powerful tablet. the damaged right leg from the accident responded nicely to the damaged ligament, after 5 mos. in therapy; taking my mile walk every morning and doing three basic exercises 3x each day, but the 3 damaged nerves leading into the spine from the seat-belt injury are still in the process of being regenerated and now I'm back into therapy again for the back treatments, which consist of hot clay packs for 30 min. 3x a week. Clara went back into hospital for a second operation on her crushed It. thigh in December, a year after the accident; was in Oshawa for a couple of months, then sent to her home here, but she couldn't handle the taxi ride to hospital for therapy, and entered hospital about 6 weeks ago to be handy to therapy, and she's still in extended care. She still uses 2 crutches, and I don't think therapy is helping. Bud and Pat were down from Walkerton this past week-end, and we(he and Pat, Annabel & Norm, Doug and I) had a conference yesterday, and all feel that w she'll have to sell her home and go to a nursing home. I think of you so often, and wonder when you'll be making another trip East. How about this year? We're having a wedding in the family Aug. 2nd — our baby, 32 years old, is marrying a very sweet young thing and we'll be attending that one for sure, God willing. Would you like to make the trip to take it in? We'll be motoring down a week or two before the big day, and you better plan to come along. Let me know in plenty of time if you can make it.
Doug and I are preparing to leave for Saint John this coming Friday or Saturday. I've had pressing business to look after down there since last November, so am a bit frustrated thinking about the delays. In November Doug and I flew to Cuba for 2 weeks; then in February my three women friends and I flew to Miami Beach for 2 weeks; then I got the Flu, so there have been many reasons why I didn't make my important Eastern trip. One other reason I'm writing at this point is to ask you to do me a favour. I can't lay my hands on a Winnipeg phone book, and I need to get the address of
the RENAWARE Distributors Ltd. When we were living in Saint John about 24 or 25 years ago we bought their stainless steel cooking utensils, and the head office was in Calgary. The knobs, handles and discs are guaranteed for a lifetime, and one of the handles to one of the pots needs to be replaced. When I tried to get their addresses in Calgary, Toronto, London, Montreal and Winnipeg I learned that all had folded up except the Winnipeg one and all I could get for that one is (Purdue St., Fort Gary, Winnipeg) but I feel I need a better address when writing. Could you get that for me out of your phone book? Sure would appreciate it, and in the meantime trust this finds you enjoying life. Do come to the wedding.
