Richard Smith Sr.1
M, #27433, b. circa 1760, d. before 17 September 1835
- Birth*: circa 1760; U.S.A.; Date of birth for Richard Smith, Sr. is uncertain. If there is only one Richard Smith at this place at this time, then he must have been the Loyalist, old enough to be around 20 at time of War. He came to Thurlow in 1789 and was married to Elizabeth Lake around 1795. Per his will, he died in early 1835, which would make him around 75 years old, not unreasonable.
per UEL Lists - Richard Dingman1 - Marriage*: before 1794; Ontario; "UCLP S3/249 1797-1802 Nicholas Lake petitioning for his daughter Betsy Smith for 200 acres." - Crown Land documents suggest that Elizabeth "Betsy" Lake is the wife of Richard Smith - per Doug Smith & Ruth Waite.
" ... has a wife and one child .. " per Crown Land Petition S 3/49 - June 22 1797; Principal=Elizabeth "Betsy" Lake2 - Death*: before 17 September 1835; Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; Richard Smith's Will shows Instrument Date of Mar 1825? (last digit not totally clear) and a Registry Date of Sept 17, 1835. Not sure when Richard Smith's death was, but it would be before the Registry Date and after the Instrument Date.2
- Residence: 1789; Conc 5, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; " ... The first large group of settlers, numbering about 50, crossed over from Prince Edward County about 1789 (no doubt making use of Mr. Meyer's batteau service). .. they settled close to the river. Among the earliest settlers are listed ... Richard Smith and sons ... " from The Rambling River, page 13 - Names of Original Settlers.
"United Empire Loyalists....." Richard Smith, John and Conrad Frederick and others came to Thurlow in 1789." per email from Ruth Waite, Feb 19, 2004.
Note: The Richard Smith noted in these writings may not mean this Richard Smith or the author may not know the specific timing - that he was married after coming here. Maybe this is later remembrances not clearly recalling the circumstances. Is there an earlier Richard Smith or is this Richard Smith older than we expect when he was married? Can we nail down a date for his birth from military records or some such??3 - Residence: 30 June 1789; Conc 5 Lot 1, Thurlow Twp., Hastings Co., Ontario; "Richard Smith; 30th June 1789; Lot 1; 200 acres; Conc 5; Thurlow" List of Location Certificates - sent to me by Doug Smith, Feb. 21, 2005.3
