  • Note*: 21 April 1852; The Breakaway, Hilton, Northumberland Co., Canada West; On April 21 1852 Hilton Lake broke through the gravel bank and flooded down the creek, destoying Lewis Shearer's saw mill and killing the owner and a worker, John Herrington.Jacob Simpson owned Lot 2 of Concession 6 at that time per the 1851 Census, which would be the land directly to the north of the creek just west of the Shearer saw mill; roughly where No. 30 Highway goes through the creek valley now. John W. Simpson, a brother, owned Conc 4, Lot 34, just down the creek a ways. His saw mill was also damaged by the flood but there were no casualties there. There is some confusion about which Simpson family was involved; it appears to have been the John W. Simspon's although previous writing indicates a William Simpson and wife Grace. I see no family like that in Brighton Twp. at this time.5
