She was the owner of Austin Telephone Company; a member of Wooler United Church, at which seh became the first woman elder and served as president of the women's insitute and the ladies' aid; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 55, Belleville; and a charter member of the White Shrine of Belleville, and the Telephone Pioneers, being the oldest Telepohone Pioneer in Canada. Mrs. Austin was also a collector of rare buttons, coins and stamps.
